Admin,
You are right in naming some of the things we can produce, but what you have to realize is that to really make anything from these production, we will have to do it in huge quantities, which is a problem, I don't thin that we have the land mass to grow say for instance coconut for coconut water that we could compete with Thailand and other coconut producing countries who are already heavily in the coconut water market!,,

I would place our best bet on coco, what we should do with the blue mountain coffee is to form a corporation and start a company in foreign countries using the blue mountain name ans open coffee shops with the best coffee in the world, we could out do Starbucks, and others, because we would have the world most renown coffee !..

We have leaders who are not thinking, and again we are too divided to make some of these small operation work and be profitable!.

I am a representative of http://www.groupishbuy.com
We are a Group buying company, that allows consumers to place there orders together to buy goods at a lower price. This however proved very difficult as most Jamaicans don't understand and are not willing to become apart of the online market place even if it is to save money.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Please re- read your first sentence :
The penalty must be incresed for Theft, your article does not solve the problem, people eat food not trees. May be they could plant Apples or Blackberry phones , pun intended

Admin,
I can tell that you are young, and you have live in a cocoon,so you seem not to have a clue how thieves work!.. Theft, is not so much the problem in Jamaica agricultural production, but the real problem is hungry and licky licky people. people who want to live free who some of them will only touch the ground when they fall down!.. if we can get people educated enough to not to but produce from people they know did not plant or raised these produce. this would cripple the thieves because they wouldn't have any market to sell what they steal!.. but as long as there is a market there will always will be thief. even with those new products you mention!..

I have the only solution to this problem. !

I share your views totally. The blackboard or even white board is almost obselete. The newer technology will stimulate better learning. I met a student the other day who is said to be be illiterate but he is very computer savvy and masters his cellphone very well. It caused me to wonder if it is the teaching methods or other isssues that have prevented him from learning how to read. I believ the use of technology/metyhod will definitely enhance the learning process and propel the student to want to learn.

While I am not au fait with all the financial and in particular tax jargans, I must say I believe there should be a move on the part of the government to encourage citizens to use more efficient forms of energy. This will spell (or count) more money in the hands of the people, reduce our fuel or fuel related bills and help preserve the environment for our children, grandchildren and tourists. Kingston is hot almost all year round - the ideal place for solar energy to be used. Why not give a one time tax credit to individuals who convert their systems to solar or other forms of renewable energy.

I will agree with you that our students need to be able to compete in the global marketplace and therefore need to be functionally literate, and might I add 'numerate' as a separate facet. I also believe that teachers need to themselves welcome technology as a means by which they can help students to have increased access to education and be able to use this technology in engaging student in meaningful tasks. Much of our classroom culture, as well as that of other stakeholders in Education would need to change.
My final comment and maybe the one I consider to be of greatest importance is that - the pedagogies used by many of our teachers today in many ways cannot be improved by simply adding the computer and its related technologies to our classrooms. As a matter of fact it may well multiply the issues we now have.
I am in strong support of your ideas but would like to say that teachers Pedagogical Content Knowledge may be where our energies need to be focused- though not as easily measured as the access to computers.

Technology is great and can support our education's development. However it can also present a problem if basic literacy is not first addressed. I also think that Jamaica as a developing is fearing pretty well where technology is compared to the rest of the world. Having taught both at home and overseas I see similar issues where the school who can afford to have all the resources while others suffer. yes it happens in developed countries also. My concern however is where you mentioned " In addition there are numerous free sites that can assist students in the learning process'. This is not necessarily a great idea in all cases as this itself requires trained personnel to monitor its use and ensure that the content of the site is up to the required standard and is appropriate for our setting. Not quite sure what you meant by "sufficient" teachers however distance learning requires resources (expensive ones) and is more appropriate for certain levels. Guess I am just having issues with this post. Sorry.
