Should eastern parishes be declared a disaster zone?

November 1st, 2012

Daryl Vaz, the Member of Parliament (MP) for West Portland has recommended that the government declare Portland a disaster zone.

A disaster zone is a region or a local heavily damaged by a natural, technological or sociological hazard. The population living there often experiences a loss of energy supply, food, services, and an increasing risk of disease. Declarations of disaster areas open up the affected areas for national or international aid.

Vaz believes that his suggestion is valid because of the level of devastation in the parish. This devastation includes buildings that have been damaged or totally demolished and communities that have been cut off as a result of landslides. He argues that since the government has problems finding the money to restore normalcy to Portland and other eastern parishes, declaring these parishes disaster zones will open up these parishes for international aid.

What is your opinion? Should Portland and other eastern parishes be declared a disaster zone? It’s time again to have your say…

It is a valid question but the question is should some of the areas in the Eastern parishes be habitable by humans considering the cost after disasters.

If we are counting environmental costs as a condition to declare disaster areas, St Catherine, Kingston and St James should be so declared because of the human beings that are murdered in these areas and the incalculable costs of these lives.

Some of these areas in Portland were a disaster before Sandy so, just make the DECLARATION and help the people

An article was written years ago which won the silver pen award, it spoke to the plight of the persons in St. Thomas, the road conditions, the lack of water and various other lack of opportunities. Sandy apparently compound an exisiting problem. The government need to stop covering the issues and correct the needs.

Portland and St. Thomas being a parish which speaks to our heritage and culture deserves better than what they have been receiving.
