A poll was done recently to document the feelings of the Jamaican public in relation to the question, “which political party is more corrupt?” This poll was the Gleaner commissioned Bill Johnson poll, and it was conducted on April 24, 25 and May 1. The poll brought out information that i do not believe to be unexpected.
According to an article in the Gleaner on June 22, 2010, the poll “unearthed that 36 percent of Jamaicans think there is more corruption in the current JLP administration, while 23 percent believe the previous PNP government was plagued by more acts of corruption”.
However, in my opinion, I think that both political parties are so filled with acts of corruption, that it is quite impossible to choose the best of both evils. I have thought about it over and contemplated the question repeatedly. Despite this, I am still unable to come up with a reasonable answer.
So I put the question to you. Which political party do you think is more corrupt? Have your say…

They are both equally corrupt
in my opinion both party are corrupt but i would give the advantage to the previous administration the are very good of covering their track. this present administration have no idea how to cover there track.we need fresh blood and both political party and get rid of the old thieves
The PNP is more corrupt
Jamaicans period! This influences the politicians and vice-versa! Not a lot can be done procedurally in JA….Always a way or cost to go-around process!!! It’s embedded in our culture and until we ALL change, corruption WILL REIGN!I laugh at these polls….
The findings of that poll is most laughable. The JLP is no where near as corrupt as the PNP. Just take a walk down memory lane to the Iran Sugar Deal, Shell Waiver and most recent, Trafigura and the Cuban Lightbulb.
Everyone who commented shows a passion that lives in all Jamaicans. Both parties are extremely “Corrupted”. That we all know. Don’t let the dark force take over our Beautiful Country. All Jamaicans are obligated (In Fact!It is our duty to make changes) to preserve the nations sanctity . The majority of Jamaicans don’t like what they see in there Governments so change it. God Bless Our Motherland .We will prevail.
PNP.Think about it . Really think about it. They break every record possible. Its really sad though, because now people have to be thinking about who’s more corrupt. This admin. is very corrupt but by far the PNP is Fool speed ahead
The PNP takes all medal on this. I yet to see anything this government does that equals or surpass the former admin.
I will say this government is the most inept in dealing with things discrete, they can learn a few tricks from the PNP on this. They are not very tactful, and miss the mark on communication. They show obvious signs of an infant admin and need more time to mature as a government.
What they are reaping now is what the PNP had sown, 18 years of social breakdown, decayed culture, illiteracy, joblessness, hopelessness, mediocrity, failures, broken promises and broken hope.
People are disappointed that it seems like more of the same, but I think there are more good in this admin than the former.
The term corruption as it relates to the Jamaican Political System and/or the major political parties is such a loaded question. Why? The fact that the corruption is so institutionalized that there is no comparison…there is an air of equal opportunity corrusion within the society.
While it may be correct to assert that both major political parties in Jamaica shrouded with corruption for many years, there is no doubt that any politician who have entered didn’t entered with intention to become infamous for being corrupt. However, whatever the reasons that they have become embroiled in corruption, it’s time for us to WAKE UP!!!
When will we as Jamaican start to demand better from those that we put in position to exact our needs? Gone should be the days when there are political parties fighting for leadership of our country.
What we need are politicians who want to do the right things by the people and for the people. It is my opinion that if all the parties truly mean the best for us then it’s time for all them to put aside the egos and selfishness and starts to act in a manner that is most beneficial for the people of Jamaica and themselves.
I believe that a merging of all the Political Parties, Social Advocate Groups, Citizen Advise Bureau along with all the Human Rights Advocates in our country will be better position to come together and table laws, regulation and policies that will be of utmost benefit to all Jamaicans.
When I look back on our proud history when MEN like Sam Sharpe, Paul Bogle, Marcus Garvey, Norman Bustamante and Daddy Manley amongst others and WOMEN like Nanny, Mary Seacole, Miss Lou amongst who selflessly dedicated their lives for a better future of OUR Jamaica.
Where are the leaders who are into Politics, Social Advocate Groups for the enjoyment of envisioning of a GREATER JAMAICA, where we can reap the benefits of our fore fathers have given their lives for us so that we can have the ability to prepare a new foundation for our next generation of future leaders who will have the honour, intelligence, courage, and compassion to do right by all that is JAMAICA.
I CHALLENGE ALL JAMAICANS LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL TO STAND UP AND DECLARE OUR DEMANDS OF NOT JUST OUR POLITICAL LEADERS BUT ALSO OUR OURSELVES TO CREATE A GREATER JAMAICA FOR ALLL…
The PNP is probably more crafty with their corruption but the JLP is throwing in your face and telling you basically to love it as if we are idiots. They won the election based on the corruption of the other party, but the MPP issue is far more corrupt than anything the PNP has ever done.
History shows us that Black nations cannot effectively govern themselves. (i.e. how many black nations have moved above the third world)
its not a case if lack of intelligence but a case of greed (i.e. Jamaica.) It makes no difference who is more corrupt for “all have sinned”. The bigger questions should be “what are you going to do about it? Most of these corrupt officials were voted into office by the people of Jamaica. Its easy to point the finger and say “this one” or “that one” but i think the person most responsible is the voter.
There is no comparison here. Even the act of asking such a question is not worthy. The PNP has institutionalised corruption in Jamaica and honestly i am yet to comprehend the honest and strong arguments that could be put to suggest that this JLP government is a corrupt one. I think the media is the most corrupt organisation in jamaica. Why dont you ask which media house is more corrupt? That is a more appropriate question as the media has done way more harm to this country than many organisations and people we deem to be corrupt.
The question ought to be considered along the lines of what is the best way forward for Jamaica in respect of better accountability, transparency, public office governance and management which inevitably will lead to globalised respectability while peace, safer communities and social justice prevails at home for rich and poor alike.
Jamaica has come a long way and our tourist postcards, north coast hotels, our warm and welcoming smiles, along with our white sand beaches gives testimony to this fact.
We are nevertheless plagued by frequent and widely internationally reported social unrest, corruption, poor Human Rights record, police brutality, maladministration and the recent “extradition gate” affair.
The nation needs GOOD people on deck doing the right things and working with the best interests of the nation at the heart of every mission statement.
The core features of good governance must be adapted and applied in every aspect of government, creating good standards as a principle and discipline embedded throughout the system which serves as a beacon of exemplary government, not merely contented with cutting corners nor selfish individual gratification…lining of pockets within the public sector, back-handlers, palm greasing and ball and chain go-slow…mismanagement and misappropriation of funds and international funds or financial aid…but setting great examples for our citizens and our global community. It isn’t just about the past faults but much more about Jamaica’s future, about implementing the right strategies, mechanism and fail-safe systems within government which works and in effect prevents and discourage corruption; improves public confidence, economic growth, foreign investment, employment, justice, education, health care and an enshrined requirement ensuring basic Human Rights and social justice…availability of basic living requirements for the less fortunate within our society.
Only then will Jamaica have the full trust of her people and the international community, which without she flounders in the murky muddy shallows indefinitely.
The party that is blatantly corrupt is the JLP. The PNP is also corrupt, they were in office for 18 years straight, so they have a longer time to be corrupt, but the JLP not even three years and the whole country can see their corruption.
I THINK THE PNP HAS DONE A GOOD SHARE OF CORRUPTION. KERN SPENCER TOP THE CAKE, BUT THE JLP START OUT BAD BRUCE AND MR COKE.
The PNP HANDS DOWN! the only thing is they are much brighter party than the JLP, can market themselves better and are real slick with their misdeeds whilst the JLP are well ….plain clumsy
Golding’s entire handling of the Coke fiasco struck a nerve as it brought ill repute to the Office of the Prime minister itself and tarnished Jamaica’s image internationally
However When one considers the billions that a poor country like us have lost that have been used to enrich politicians and their cronies it makes me physically ill.
P.s Plus I bet for every PNP scandal unearthed there are several more still hidden
Both Party in Jamaica is corrupt they mash up Jamaica for since the 1970s now in 2010.
Honesty I think the whole Jamaica is corrupt and lawless.
Corruption is institutional in JA. Especially the media. They are gullible and lazy too. I have been looking forward to some journalism into this corruption issue but what the media has provide for us is shallow and scandalous.
only GOD perfect, pnp and jlp are the same . none a them no better
I think the JLP is more corrupt to have a government elected on the basis that corruption is their main task to get rid of and in a few months in governance they throw it in your face is really atrocious, lets face the fact the PNP has corruption but to say they are undercover with it. I think that we need to know the facts first before we point a finger, and until there is a story about the PNP I will say that the JLP is the worst I have seen so far.
The PNP track record shows that they are more corrupt! Why??? Because they had more time!
JLP needs two or more consecutive terms to cut even….
what comments…are we all asleep? The JLP gone clear…..I would not like to see them in for eighteen years…..
tHE pnp IS THE WORST corrupt party that ever EXISTED in the HISTORY of Jamaica. The PNP after 19-years have brought JAMAICA to the gutter, to the dust, to the grave. When the PNPs nightmares took over Jamaica, I hardly think there was 10% corruption in Jamaica.
When the PNPs nightmares handed Jamaica back to the JLP, Jamaica reached the HEIGHT of TEN THOUSAND PERCENT in CORRUPTION.
Just to name a FEW, 15-Billion debt. $35,000 house repairs, 33-million dollars, car company write off, FINSAC, LIGHT BULB, TRAFIGURA, SANDALS, AIR Jamaica sales SLOTS, BOJ and other HUGE contracts, Bus company corruption, people working 23-hours a day. Waste managements contracts, truck going in empty, and going 3-4-5-6 times a day with different license plates, police officers were allowed to own TOW trucks, TAXIS, BUSES,Good year tire in St. Thomas, business deals, take it and run with it, and there are thousand more, to fill this world. Now tell me this, who is more CORRUPT than the PNPs nightmare. Who can name half of those corruptions by the JLP? Name them please.
Nobody can beat the JLP in corruption. When we speak about the PNP, we speak about 18 yrs.
The disasters the JLP has done in their short period in power is atrocious.
Their people are bold, and do whatever they want right in front of the entire country without any shame…and the country..not a word.
I will take the PNP anytime, and hope when the JLP gets out of power, we don’t see them again for 30 years! This country has never suffered so much since golding took power.
They both are corrupt but the PNP is ahead by far, i think the JLP is more of a bit clumsy than the perception of been corrupt.
No body beats the wiz and the wiz is PJ Patterson. The PNP of course
Definitely the PNP is most corrupt. Under their governance the majority of Jamaicans became greedy and corrupt. Omar Davis and his Deputies in the Finance Ministry set the stage by “running with it” – they did nothing to encourage Jamaicans to pay taxes, but only focused on borrowing monies at high interest rates! Shame! Shame!. Lawlessness and Indiscipline exploded under their watch, and now this Government has the task of trying to regularize things. May God help them, as the Lumpens from all categories of professions are just dying for the PNP to get back in government so that they can benefit from the corruption.
Jamaicans, beware! the PNP only pretend to love ‘poor people’ and only want to get POWER at any costs. we cannot allow the PNP back into power anytime soon.
all this now is a senseless question, meant to draw from real issues..there are no statesmen left in politics in Jamaica, the days of Manley and Busta, along with those honorable ministers are long gone..
