Consumers brace for more increases!

Author : teriann

Here we are again wondering how much will we be affected by the upcoming hike in baked products.

Remember when patties used to be the cheapest item on the menu?  Well, soon we will be forced to find alternatives as the prices continue to rise. Although there is no date yet for the increases to take effect we are already calculating how much the 50% increase will cut into our meager income.

As consumers, we have the option of just reducing our intake but what about those who make their living by selling baked items?

They will surely be hit hard by the increase as it will cut into their profits. They will have to find creative ways to stay in business.

In the meantime, we have to think of ways we can provide our own supplies of wheat.  Can we in Jamaica produce enough wheat to meet local demand? Just a thought!   Why not leave me a line and weigh in on the issue!

Teri Ann, 90% of the world’s wheat is grown in the temperate regions. There is a reason…it is a temperate crop. For almost half a century, scientists have been trying to develop tropical varieties that are high producing. Kenya grows quite a bit…above 2000 meters. So maybe we could get in a crop around the cabin at the top of the Blue Mountain Peak. If a variety was available today, it would be years before the Ministry of Agriculture get through its field trials and persuade farmers to grow it.
