Why fuss and fight? Let good music prevail

While the constant friction between the Bounty Killer-led Alliance and the Vybz Kartel-led Portmore Empire can easily become annoying to many, there are still those in the dancehall who are rooting for the breakout of yet another ‘lyrical war’… or should I just say war, as there are or have been signs in the past to suggest that the heated arguments on record could easily move past the boundaries of being just lyrical.

But is this what we really want for our dancehall music? Think about it. Yes, it is within the nature of dancehall for artistes to go at each other lyrically, (look how long Bounty Killer and Beenie Man have been at it – more than 10 years) but when we see the music taking a turn for the worst (in the case of the Kartel-Mavado feud which went past just being lyrical), one has to wonder if such lyrical feuds are even worth the attention and support of fans?

Well for me personally, I believe in enjoying good music. Yes if there are a few ‘clash’ songs to spice things up a little, we are all for that, but when things begin to get personal to the point where fans have to be concerned about their own safety when attending dances and parties, because entourages engage in physical altercations, or even when selectors are physically assaulted for playing too little or too much Kartel or Mavado songs, then we know it’s time to go back to the drawing board and click the ‘restart’ button.

Bounty Killer is a veteran, an idol in dancehall music, Mavado the new sensation of dancehall music and Vybz Kartel, always hailed as a lyrical genius… why not put all these titles to good use? Live up to the name, step up to the plate and show Jamaica and the rest of the world what making good music is all about!
