Spirit Not Good Fit For Air Jamaica – Diaspora Says

A number of Jamaicans based overseas who regularly fly Air Jamaica have indicated that they would not be continuing their support of the national airline if it were to be bought by Spirit. Earlier this year it was reported that owners of Spirit had bought the airline and it was going to be renamed ‘Spirit of Jamaica’, something a little surprising since the Jamaican Government had constantly said that one condition of the sale was that the airline would keep its name.

That report turned out to be false and the most recent report over the weekend is that owners of Spirit are no longer the bidders being negotiated with. This is a welcome development by a number of Jamaicans, especially those who said they have flown Spirit in the past. There has been tremendous concern that Spirit, a no frills airline, would cut much of what makes Air Jamaica such a pleasure to fly and no one was looking forward to the experience of Spirit again. American Airlines would benefit the most from a Spirit/Air Jamaica deal based on the comments.

Many of the Jamaicans understood that Air Jamaica needed capital and it was a drag on the country’s budget but the buyer’s reputation should also matter.
