I really like Beenie Man in a purely platonic way. I really do. His ability to get in trouble and come out unscathed is unparalleled and not to mention the fact that he has managed to appoint himself ‘King of the dancehall’ and get everyone else agreeing is indeed a commendable quality, which deserves mention.
I really like Beenie Man. Which other public figure can refer to his wife as ‘it’ when he said ‘mi a breed it’ and not anger the various women’s groups in this country? Isn’t that a commendable quality? I mean Beenie Man some how always manages to come out of any bad situation looking like the angel no matter what. Now, just when I was beginning to forget about him he pops up again this time declaring himself ‘Emperor of the Gaza’ and telling the world about his wealth.
Again, that’s why I like him because he has a knack of staying in the public eye although he doesn’t need to and he still acts like the 25-year-old who thrilled the world with Who Am I in the 1990s.
Think about it, why does Beenie Man need to get involved in a feud between Mavado and Vybz Kartel? If you are the King of the Dancehall, why not squash the dispute with a decree. Isn’t that what a king is supposed to do. That’s why I’m fond of him. It appears to me that he just doesn’t know how to pick his fights and he is never tired of entering a tiff. That is a commendable quality because most other artistes of his generation have long moved on from fussing and jumping on feuding wagons. Even his nemesis Bounty Killer seems to have moved on. But, Beenie Man being the good king and warrior has taken on a new battle. He has declared his support for Vybz Kartel and at the same time declaring himself head of an enterprise which was not of his creation.
But that is Beenie Man and that’s why I really like him. His never say die attitude and his refusal to fade away into retirement and legendary status has the ability to grate on one’s nerves. But, he still continues.
By the way Beenie, if you are emperor of the Gaza where does that leave Vybz Kartel? Surely you may soon have to put down a rebellion because two emperors cannot rule one country. Sooner or later one is going to want to usurp the other.
And, while I’m on Gaza why would one want to become ruler of one of the most inhospitable places on earth. Gaza is a place of 1.4 million people stuck in a six-mile space. If you don’t know what that means picture everybody living in Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine (including Portmore), St James, Clarendon, St. Ann and St. Elizabeth living between Papine, Six Mile, Harbour View and Kingston Harbour and you will get the picture of what Beenie Man and Vybz Kartel wish to be associated with. Gaza is so bad it makes Riverton look like a suburb and Waterford like Beverley Hills.
I digress.
Beenie Man, I like you but it’s time you leave the youngsters to fight among themselves. I know you will say Ninja Man, Super Cat et. al did it with you and Bounty Killer. However, you say you are an international act and ‘King’ why not start behaving like royalty for a change. After all, aren’t you a grandfather and doesn’t that title carry some amount of respect and responsibility?

Agree with the thrust of the article. Problem is that some folks, approaching the twilight of their careers will sometimes engage in or say something to keep their names in the spotlight. No doubt Beenie Man has been in the music game for a good while now and has reaped a good financial harvest from it. Assuming he’s letting his money work for him rather than vice versa, he should be able to live comfortably for the rest of his life. This also assumes he has not been sowing his seed all over Jamaica and elsewhere and don’t have to worry about child support and (p)alimony issues (with musicians this seems to be the ‘norm’ rather than the exception). Leave the pettiness and rivalry issues in J’can music to the wanna-be’s, Beenie Man. You have nothing musically to prove to anyone in Ja. You have been to the mountain top.
What a beautiful sum up about the KING MOSES’BEENIE MAN’ thats why mi LUV MI WORST, mi luv how him flexx, i know him personal from new york, when him in town the king come bout and hang with us at the queen of the sea inna queens. Mi always luv him, but mi get fi HONOR him more when d bangarang did bruk out bout the death of bogle, him give a interview bout how him did a get threats, and it go as far that him youth could not go to school, in talking about it THE KING STARTED 2 CRY LIVING EYE WATA!! Fi real, BEENIE MAN A ‘KING’ FI REAL!!!!!!! 2 bad who no like that!!!!! mi luv what u write say…bless up. MOSES MI LUV U MORE BLESSINGS ALWAYS!!!! R.T.Queenann
Oh wow… This summary is on point. I have been wonder the same thing, from he came out with the song stating he is the emperor. How could this be, when kartel was the one who established the crew. He even went as far as saying he was the one who put kartel on billboard, he was the one who put TI and Maya on billboard. Now that was a bit bold….
I believe if you are the king, you dont need to be trying to take the lime light from the new artists who are trying to make their name in the game.
Yes, when he and bounty had their feud Ninja and Supercat joined. But what did it do to their career? In my eyes Beenie is going backward instead of fwd, he should not have formed alliance and start counteracting songs to fit in. He is bigger than that and doing that made him look small.
I truly love this blog, because you have hit the nail on the head. With the ?’s you have asked.
Idi! I do not want2say ur an idiot. Di worl kno all bout gaza. but in ja gaza is a community in waterford pt mo. Dats di literal meaning. Di musical meaning of gaza points to the post modern type of j’can pop music listeners and their preferences. gully mean di exact same thing musically. Suh dont tek di ting literal.
Amilli, I’m not taking it literal and I know about the Gaza community in Portmore and the fact that it was called Borderline before Shebada corrupted the word. If youd don’t believe check some of Kartel’s earlier works when he referred to himself as being from Borderline. Also, ask the Waterford and Greater Portmore Police if you don’t believe me But, seriously there are far more ‘nicer’ places with meaner reputations that he could have chosen. What about Baghdad in Iraq; Cali in Colombia;Chechnya, Russia; Tirhana, Albania; Johannesburg and Cape Town South Africa, Lagos, Nigeria; Managua, Nicragua… and the list goes on? Also, with the exception of Chechnya, Baghdad and Tirana, the rest of places have similar conditions which Waterford face daily. I’m KNOW Waterford has trees, does not have a bomb resistant wall around it and is not that cramped! Also, I know about Gully too and that’s another blog that’s coming.
So Amilli call me an idiot if you wish, but I know enough about Gaza both locally and internationally; musically, literally and geographically to be able to say no one should want to be associated with it.
PS The blog was about Beenie Man and his involvement in the current feud and not necessarily about Gaza!
Yea, i get ur drift. But human beings do liv there, wit aspirations and hopes jus lyk u n me.. so blog all u want but ppl do av feelings no matter their surroundings. u c i av frenz there n zay r gud ppl. so wen u say y wud 1 want2 assoc wit gaza u stepped on som toes and also sounded abit prejudicial. and also – associating wit our ghettoes is d only way 2try2 uplift dem… an outstreached arm means alot 2som ppl.
and also, the gaza abroad needs 2b highlighted cuz its a genocidal act dat is been perpetuated on those ppl. Its a crime and the worl goes idly by saying nothing bcuz we do not want 2b assoc wit suffering ppl? I am not an xpert in life but i KNOW the human reaction wud be to help another dat is hurting and oppressed! but som of us r so desenseticized fr our humanity dat we choose not2 want2 assoc or help the oppressed aka gaza!
I firmly agree with you Amilli and the idea was not to sound prejudicial. 1.4 million people crammed in a small space with foriegners killing at random and also stifling your potential is not a good thing. I do believe however, that Kartel and his crew just picked the name to sound cool without fully understanding what the name represents. Gaza is a violent place yes, but it is also inhospitable and oppressed. The ‘oppression’ in Waterford is more mental than physical, racial and ideological. They don’t have be searched everyday at the bus terminus as they head to work. Also, if there were no Isreali oppression which is the main cause of the violence, Gaza would have surely had some prosperity and Kartel et al would gladly borrow a name from elsewhere.
While Jamaicans have developed a reputation of adopting the names of violent locations, Kartel’s use of the name Gaza is merely for commercial gain and street credibility than championing a cause wholsale. He started with the Broadcasting Commission but if he wants the name Gaza to really mean something in local parlance he should rally other artistes namely the alliance, the Gully squad and the neutrals to get radio and the authorities to treat dancehall better instead of bickering with Mavado et al.
Excellent site, keep up the good work
I am glad you care about quality. The problem is that not enough individuals take the time to embrace talent. It
