Invest in your children

When we think about investments we often think of putting money into some project/product that will pay us a return over a certain period.  However, today I want to look at a different type of investment, investing in your children’s future.  The investment that you make in your children’s education will offer you a greater future return than any investment product can give.  Sending your children to school is obviously important but with all of the problems in the education sector it is enough.

It is estimated that over 25 per cent of the population is functionally illiterate, over the years we have replaced reading with watching television or playing video games.  It is not possible to build a country with a workforce that is lacking in basic skills.  In addition there is little hope of job advancement for those lacking educational achievements.  We need to stimulate our young people into reading and to make it a priority in their lives.

Currently, there is a good opportunity available in Jamaica with the arrival of the Logos Hope ship, the largest floating book shop in the world.  There are over 7,000 titles available and though it is primarily marketed as a Christian book ship there are many books available for non christians.  There are reference books such as dictionaries, atlases, encyclopedias and a host of books on nature, geography and sports.  One can also find books on cooking, biographies, craft and of course the classics.  The beauty of the situation is that they are available at prices significantly below what they are selling for in the bookshops.  This presents a golden opportunity for you to get books that will stimulate and inform your kids.  It is not everyone that has access to the internet to seek out information so take advantage of what is on offer.  For those who are in Tertiary education, don’t miss the opportunity to buy three text books for only $800 in the deal bag section.

The ship is located at Rockfort pier across from the Cement company and is worth the drive to get there and the wait to get on board.  It is also an experience for those of you who have never been on a boat to learn about life at sea.  If you live in rural areas and really can’t make it to town, ask a friend to visit the boat for you.
It is an experience that can change your life and provide an important foundation for your children’s future.

Agreed. Majority of the nowadays kids don’t appreciate reading. One needs to read to learn.

The importance of this topic is especially high. This might sound cliche but the children are the future. Parents meed to understand that disregarding the well being of a child is dismal for the child’s growth in this society. Today’s society is a different culture than that of the home so a child has to adapt to the unforgiven society. Parents grooming and investing in the child’s future will ensure survival of whatever may cross path’s with that child as he grows into adolescence into maturity. Children are facing more and more each day and it is heart wrenching. An issue so dear to heart it saddens me whenever I read some of the atrocities.
