We’ll start this one off with a preamble; Children are blessings to this world. Most parents are happy to play their role. We believe this to the fullest. That aside, what is up with the constant ‘when you going to have a baby’ question?
Based on Flair’s experience, it comes from everyone; friends, parents, and those not that close to you. One person even gets it from her Gynaecologist! It’s directed at those who are married, those in a relationship, even those who aren’t in a relationship. Come on, give us a break!
We are not referring to those made in jest, we’re talking about the serious queries. I’d like to think that if a woman is of child bearing age without a child, maybe it’s because she’s not ready to have one? Could that be a possibility?
In a society where it seems there are more single parent homes than partners willing to raise a child in stable and loving relationships, you would think that it would make sense a woman plans before she has a child? When a woman is without a child in Jamaica well into her child bearing years, names start reeling off the tongues; mule, barren, lesbian and the list goes on. A similar scenario ensues for the men; ‘you no get no youth yet?.
From what we understand, children aren’t just cute cuddly toys with which you play dress up. Aside from that, it is also a great possibility for a woman, or even a man to have a fulfilling life without having children.
Come on it’s a choice. We will when we’re ready.
