How to Conserve Electricity!

Author : teriann

Recently I read an article that proclaimed consumers will benefit from reduced electricity bills in April. Although that news is definitely welcome, how much will consumers really save in April?

Well a J.P.S press release stated in the article that, “..the overall impact on the bill of a typical residential customer using 165 kilowatt-hours per month will see the bill moving from $7,071.57 for March to $6,586.80 for April – a decline of $484.77.”

Finally consumers will benefit from a real ‘Easter’ surprise. The company has also stated that electricity costs are linked to fuel prices as well as the movement of the Jamaican dollar.

So the decrease might not be sustained for the rest of the months in the year.

This means that while consumers can enjoy the lowered bills this month, they must make a determined effort to do what they can to conserve electricity. Although there are other factors that affect the cost, consumers can lower their bills on a long term basis if they employ specific measures.

Conserve electricity!

A number of Jamaicans recognize the need to conserve electricity so they use the florescent light bulbs instead of the incandescent ones.

Is this the only way to conserve electricity?

Well another way to conserve electricity is to ensure that small appliances are plugged out when not in use.

Let’s not forget to unplug those chargers! It might be convenient to leave chargers in the wall ready at anytime to charge your phone but they are still drawing power that is going nowhere.

Whenever you’re done charging a device just unplug it and leave it near the outlet. It is worth the extra three seconds of time it will add to your daily routine.

Simply turning lights off when you leave a room is also important.

Those of us who have air conditioners in our homes should also remember to shut off power from the breaker as well as turning the unit off to avoid higher bills. Some persons go as far as plugging out their refrigerators at nights but this is not always practical.

How do you conserve electricity? Let me hear from you!

so with that said I guess Jamaicans should be happy with a $500 refund after years of hiked electricity bills and untold reasons for such. I think not. Their total honesty should always be expected and more Jamaicans need to speak up about this. For far too long they have enslaved our pockets after our hard days work.
They nee to be locked up too for robbing us blind. Away on vacation and back to a $30,000 bill; I say sue JPS for fibbing

  2. I WAS AWAY FOR 3 WEEKS EVERY THING WAS PLUGGED OUT EXCEPT THE REFRIGERATOR WHICH WAS SWITCHED TO COLD AND RETURNED TO A BILL OF $12,289.35 THIS IS DAYLIGHT ROBBERY. I LIVE ALONE AND I CONSERVE ENERGY, SO JPS NEED TO EXPLAIN. THEY NEED TO UPGRADE FROM THOSE OLD EQUIPMENT, THE READINGS ARE NOT ACCURATE. I AM A VERY DISGRUNTLED CUS TOMER AND I HAVE REGRETS OF RETURNING TO THIS COUNTRY.

Way cool! Some extremely valid points! I appreciate you
writing this write-up and the rest of the website is also really good.

AA-You need to do research.JPS has never hiked anyone’s bill. You have a meter at home and thus you are billed for your usage as recorded on it.The equipment at JPS can only be upgraded when the OUR allows that to happen. As they prefer to brand the organization as inefficient, they refuse to allow same to happen.
IV Griffiths-Be aware that when you pay what you owe on your account efore leaving the country, you would still have a meter reading coming.Your meter is read every 30days so there is no way you can expect that the total figure outstanding to JPS is the same as is currently outstanding on your account.Electricity in Jamaica is POST-PAID!
JPS needs to really start giving people prepaid meter and when the see that paying $5,000.00 toward their account may not allow them to have 4 weeks of service, but instead,TWO!!!!!!!!!!!! UNNU CUSS EM TIME DEH!
