I have always been a ‘dog person’. Growing up I had my share of dogs who in various ways provided companionship. protection and love. Of course I am not adverse to other kinds of pets, in fact I also have had a cat, turtle, fish, birds and a goat as my pet. Yes I said goat, but that is a story for another day.
Pets can be wonderful additions to the family. They teach children responsibility and how to care for something that is vulnerable. Pets also provide companionship and love. What do we need to keep our pets healthy?
Environment
It is important that the environment that the pet will be is one that best suits its needs. For example. if you live in a small apartment with very little access to green areas, it is best not to choose a pet that needs lots of space. Bear in mind that if you keep your pet in a cold or a very hot area with no shade this can adversely affect your pet.
If pets are going to be left alone for long periods of time, it is also essential that they have access to food and water during your absence. Dogs are naturally inquisitive and can get into dangerous situations if left unsupervised. Make sure that where your dog lives is safe, secure and free from hazards.
Grooming/Vet Care
Some animals are very low maintenance while others require more care. It is always a good idea to get professional help in ensuring that your pet stays in optimal health. Dogs may need to be groomed or receive shots and some other pets, such as birds might also need the regular services of a veterinarian.
Diet
You may choose to purchase your pet’s food from a pet store. However if you are making your own treats for your pet be careful. Ensure that you research carefully before attempting to give your pet your own mixture.
Remember human food and animal food is very different and some food items that we can easily tolerate can be toxic for our pets. On that note, as it is the festive season persons might be tempted to offer the dog leftovers of that family dinner. Although this might a common practice, your leftovers could literally kill your pet!
Do not overfeed your pet. In this case too much of even a good thing is bad! If your dog is overweight, feed him earlier in the day so he has more time to work it off. Some animals such as cats might graze throughout the day while others eat a lot at one sitting.
Take care of your pets and they will thank you for it! So how do you care for your pet? Let me know by dropping a comment below!

You made a good point that pet care is also concerned about the environment the animal is living in. I plan to start looking for such services in the future so that I know where to go once I adopt a dog. I recently got my landlord’s blessing that it’s find for me to have a pet in my apartment as long as its not too big.
