Public servants often get a bad reputation. They are usually perceived to be lazy and ineffective by some members of the public. Ironically despite this negative view, they were the first group of people to be told that they must ‘tighten’ their belts in view of the economic straits that we currently find ourselves.

As public servants saw their bills increase, their salaries were ‘frozen’ and so it was a double struggle to maintain an acceptable standard of living.

Personally, I am of the view that instead of being reviled, public sector workers should be given incentives by the private sector so that the wage freeze under which they are currently restrained will not be such a severe hardship.

Well, it seems as if MegaMart is one company that appreciates the sacrifice that public sector workers have made as they have recently decided to offer special discounts.
According to The Gleaner, ‘ Public-sector workers and pensioners will receive an upfront gift valued at $6,600 each, in the form of a free three-year membership and $3,000 worth of vouchers redeemable once they make a purchase of $5,000 before GCT at MegaMart .’

Is it a good package?
Normally to become a member of the wholesale club, persons have to pay an annual $1000.00 membership fee. This fee is waived for public sector workers during the promotion.
The membership entitles members to receive points that they can redeem for store vouchers. If $10,000 is spent in one shopping trip, the customer receives $1000.00 in store credit.

The public sector worker will only have to spend $5000.00 to redeem the vouchers they are presented with when they sign up for their free membership. The vouchers given to the public sector workers have dates stamped on them so they can not be spent in the same month.
However, despite the limits put on the use of the vouchers, I still think it’s a good deal.

The public workers I asked about the promotion said they appreciated the efforts made by Megamart to alleviate their financial suffering.
I hope that this move by the company is copied by other companies so that different categories of customers can also get a well deserved break.

What do you think of the MegaMart discounts?

  1. Public servant says:

As a public servant I am truly grateful for this venture from the Megamart family. It is a positive move by megamart, and I’m sure that the public servants will benefit significantly especially in this tight economic climate.
