Okay I admit it, I was caught in the back to school rush just like the droves of persons who hit the streets not only in Half Way Tree but Downtown as well.

I had diligently saved for the back to school period but there were just some glaring holes in the budget that found me struggling to complete all my purchases on time.

It was while shopping during this hectic period, that I saw several practices among shoppers that had me wondering if they had any idea of how much danger they were placing themselves and their families.

I saw shoppers travelling with large amounts of cash and sometimes they even stopped on the street to check their purchases.

The crowds at the stores made it very easy to encourage those who make it their business to ‘shop’ by taking what they did not buy, as many customers placed their bags within easy reach.
Now I don’t have criminally bent mind but I could see how easily those shoppers could become targets.

So here are 7 of the worst things you can do while shopping!!

  1. Never travel with large amounts of cash, where possible use a debit or credit card.
  2. If you drive, put purchases in the car so you are not struggling with too many bags.
  3. C heck your purchases before you leave the store.
  4. Don’t leave your bags with anyone to watch unless they are a bag attendant in the store not even if they look ‘honest’.
  5. Don’t keep your wallet in your back pocket.
  6. Don’t be distracted so that means no texting or talking on the phone while shopping.
  7. Be observant of people around you. Sometimes the other people you see shopping are not really interested in buying anything, they just want to take what you have bought!

On a side note, I recently heard an announcement on the radio that someone found a knapsack filled with school supplies on the bus and had given it to the radio station in hopes of finding the owner.

I hope they were successful and it serves as a reminder for those who take the bus to check that they have all their packages when they come to their destination.

Be safe while shopping during the back to school rush!

How do you stay safe? Let me hear from you!
