In Jamaica, we have a strong aversion to doing anything on time.
Often consumers wait until the very last moment before they pay anything whether its bills or taxes.
This means that on the last day before any deadline, the lines to pay are usually very long and this contributes to the frustration of consumers.
Is there a reason why people wait so long to pay?
Well financially speaking, it might be that persons have not put aside enough funds to pay the bills or taxes that they owe. However, at times it might be simply a case of not being organized and keeping track of the dates.
Procrastination might be easy to slip into but it does have consequences. Overdue taxes incur penalties which cost consumers money they would have otherwise saved.
By waiting until the day of the deadline a lot of time is wasted by consumers that could otherwise have been spent in a more productive manner.
What are some ways to ensure your taxes are paid on time?
I know a lot of Jamaicans are adverse to using the Internet but why not try paying your taxes online? Paying online will save time and money as you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your home.
The tax administration website of Jamaica offers customers the option of paying their G.C.T. online.
If you normally pay by cheque there are also electronic cheque drop boxes located at main tax offices.
Income tax returns are due on March 15, 2014, so it’s a good idea to mark the day on your calendar and ensure you set up reminders before the deadline.
What if you are busy during the week?
Well the Portmore Tax Office opens on Saturdays 10:00am to 4:00pm.
So you can make use of the weekend! Pay your taxes on time and avoid the rush!
