Tips for surviving back to school fees!(Part 1)

Author : teriann

Many persons were ecstatic when they found out that their child had been placed in a traditional high school of their choice after taking GSAT (grade six achievement test).

The exam is designed to be used as a determining factor in deciding where the child will complete his secondary education.

School Costs

The joy however has certainly been tempered when parents realized how much money their children would now be costing them during this new phase of their development.

The average cost of school fee inclusive of insurance, P.T.A. and book rental fees ranges between $9000 – $30,000 per year. Some schools also encourage parents to pay for medicals to be done at the school which can range between $1500.00 – $2000.00.

There is of course the cost of new uniforms which can cost up to $16,000 for a complete set for the week.  Then there is also the added cost of new shoes, socks and P.E. gears which are normally purchased at the school.

Let’s not forget the cost of textbooks and other materials needed for classes for the new school year.

Tips for surviving back to school expenses

A number of schools have encouraged parents to pay the school fees early rather than wait for September morning which is good since that is usually the highest cost.

I also think that is a good idea to buy items such as school supplies and uniform gradually over the summer holidays.

Some of the textbooks will be offered on rental so parents can save on that as it is already included in the school fee. I have always suggested to parents to wait before buying the textbooks. Perhaps someone who has recently graduated from high school can either donate or sell their books to parents at a reduced cost.

Are you a member of a credit union? Did your child achieve good grades in the GSAT examination?

If so why not check to see if any bursaries are available for your child?

How are you saving on back to school costs?
