Mandeville Fish Vendors are off the hook!

Author : teriann

The recent discovery of embalming fluid found in fish sold in the Mandeville market made everyone nervous about consuming fish from the market.

However, consumers can now breathe a sigh of relief as Dr. Tufton, Minister of Agriculture, gave the green light for consumption of the fish.

I think what happened was extremely scary and I hope that measures will be put in place to prevent it from happening again.

The vendors whose livelihood depends on fish sales should join the fight to keep their fish clean from any hazardous products.  After all, they are the ones who suffer the most when no one buys the fish.  It’s sink or swim for them and the fishing industry!

What do you think could be done to ensure that this situation is not repeated?

Some of the free money they get to fight crime so often and funds confiscated from dudus and
cohorts should be used to hire inspectors, buy
6 good cigarette speed boats to use in our waters, and quit trying to run the country with
arawak canoes fitted with a motor currently being used.

Is there an investigation, how it got in the fishes, are there preventions for in the future?

Jamaica can do better with hiring people and
equipting the country with the necessary tools to run this place, with all the aide from begging over the years until now.

I would not eat the fish down there, have they set up the proper people to see if any little
oil balls have rolled upon our shores.

Tthe Govt has no present laws in place on who would/should pay if oil get into our water-ways space?

Still don’t trust some of those vendors. I’ve had that experience at the Causway some years ago and still think this sinister act is still very much alive.

There is a law of the sea office in ja.Its called the sea bed authority. Thats where you deal with the international effects of oil spills LJ florida

I hope the authorities do not just leave this now and hope that everything is okay. Now more than ever we have to be vigilant. Not just in Mandeville, but over the entire Jamaica. And not just with fish, but with anything that Jamaicans have to consume.

What is wrong with inconsiderate and greedy vendors/fishermen? I wonder if the chemical came from the fishermen who spend several days on the sea fishing and use the chemical to keep the fish fresh until they sold them to the public or to the venders. From my recollection, this is not the first time that that kind of thing happened. Where are the public health inspectors? I think ramdom testings should be done aboard the fishing boats and in the markets. Nothing is safe to eat nowadays; i am so scared to purchase food locally and those that are brought into the country from overseas. There is little respect fr human life/health. I hope the governmentment will step up food safety laws and punishment for those found endangering the lives of the public be given jail sentences or hefty fines and their right to fish or selling fish will be denied for ever.

The whole idea is disgusting. As a tourist from Canada, I know that many people will not visit Jamaica again, one for the corruption/crime, two for the food ~ which is becoming a crime.
Jamaica needs to get it’s act together and get into the 21st century.
Jamaica has become a joke. People who have visited will not come back because everyone who has come to your island has been harassed in one way or another. If people have to be afraid to eat fish when they come for a vacation, what else is there to eat on this island?

  7. teriann says:

Ah Christy it is always sad to hear negative impressions that others have about Jamaica. However, there is a lot of good here we just need to weed out the bad. On a side note there are a lot of other tasty meals that we prepare that surpasses anything else you have experienced. I hope you will change your mind and give the country another visit.

Christy there’s good and bad in EVERY country, its is annoying about our crime and corruption but it is in Canada too, dont forget
you all are constantantly marching about one problem or another over there, so please do not DISRESPECT the country in general there are decent ppl here too.

There’s homelessness ( Queen & King Sts), when I was last there, there was a terrible rapist on the loose, I got served rotten food down on Spindina;the native Indians are treated shabbily there except a check thats doled out to them mthly, no Canada is no Utopia I have seen poverty and pad-handlers also the squeegie kids, but that does not represent all Canada where scams are ranned out of into the US on their seniors, so please dont dis

Every country have good and bad lets not throw stones when we live in glass house

    @Jo Bent: well said

Jo Bent, come on now. You cannot compare Canada to Jamaica at all.
First of all, the population ratio. I have visited Jamaica for business 6 times in a course of two years and was harassed where ever I went from the beach to shopping, it was continuous. Second, your corruption is island wide. Every country has their homeless people. Talk about rapist? My step daughter was drug raped in Jamaica on a visit and hates everything about Jamaica. I have to remove jewelry when I traveled to Jamaica. Gee, do you have to do that when you visit Canada? No.
Crime is on every single corner in your island. Wake up and read what the rest of the world is saying about Jamaica. Everyone on one airplane ride back from Jamaica all said the same thing: the food in Jamaica was horrible. You know nothing about the natives. I worked beside a native occupation. You are both clueless and ignorant, something else how, very sadly, the rest of the world perceives Jamaica.
As for food, we have different ethnic cultures where you cannot only enjoy western food but other cultures foods. Jamaica’s speciality is jerk chicken? And now fish filled with flormaldayde? Not very appetizing.
You were only on one street in Canada which you experienced bad food…where as the whole island of Jamaica is filled with horrible food.
Look in your grocery stores. Where is most of the food imported from? Canada and the US. Why??? Think before you open your mouth.

Christy I am so sorry you have had such bad experiences in Jamaica but in keeping with my positive nature may I remind you that one of Jamaica’s greatest treasures are her people. There are many things to dislike about Jamaica but there are enough positives that make us a unique and culturally diverse island. We should not try to compare our island to any other first world country as the truth is we are still a far way off in our development process. So bear with us and give the people here another chance to prove you wrong!

Oh Christy! be nice. Yes we have our problems but don’t be so down on Ja. It is unfortunate what has happened to your step daughter. The real Ja, is peace and love. Yes, not easy to find like it used to be but it is there. I go in the country and walk by the river side, and sit on the rock stone and chat with the folks. They are nice folks. I ride on the bus, and chat with the old lady, and drink a beer with the little man who just got off his donkey. That is Ja. What has brought problems in Ja is the vulgar music and the lyrics. The gun lyrics and gangster lyrics, the dutty wine, and daggering. Avoid these areas where decadence is the order of the day. Take a swim in the beautiful caribbean sea. Pick a mango from a tree. Eat some jerk chicken and drink a red stripe. That’s Ja. Drive carefully through the pot holes, and hope one day they will fix the road.Sleep in a house with zinc roof and listen to the rain. That’s Ja. Ja is not Canada, US, or UK. If the security force could clean up the gunthing and the govt would fix the road, and people would start say mawning, mass ralph and sister mary. That is Ja. Yes we have some serious problems, but dont’t go put all Ja in one basket. There are good, bad, and ugly any where in the world. Just be nice.

Christy is a bigot, I am not saying we dont have problems but what country is utopia? I have a lot to say about my country but its mine, I am not saying you cannot find faults
but you were generalizing with your disrespect
if you or family were abused here I apolygize
on behalf of my country, however maybe since you are being hassled here so much it would be better to stay away. What is the attraction?

Canada does have a rape problem that covered up,Toronto papers said it not me, crimes in Scarbrough,Finch, Jane, scams from boiler rooms up andand down Peter and Queen Sts, gangs over Etobicoke, sufferers around Dufferin area, poverty in Windsor along VIA railroads, and around Barrie.
No Jamaica cannot be like Canada because you ppl classify us third world ,I’ve said my piece and dont want to match wits about crime etc, but I did want to say dont disrespect a whole nation as you do when you post.

Now I’ll rise above your negativity, have a nice day, evening or night Christy

  14. *This really answered my problem, thank you!
