The best part of being a consumer is the ability to choose where to shop. The variety of options give consumers the upper hand as businesses compete for their attention. This results in decreased prices for selected goods or services which is always good news for the consumer.
Some consumers however, simply don’t have the time or effort to search for the best deals. Their lives are one big rush so they grab what they can without making any further investigations. Although I have known persons who willingly drive miles out of their way to get a deal, many are content to shop where it is most convenient.
Downtown and Uptown Deals
One of the places which offers goods and services at a reduced costs is downtown Kingston.
This venue is not without its challenges as both vendors and shoppers struggle with undesirable elements and limited facilities. Some items on sale are not always of the best quality so consumers must exercise due diligence.
On a recent trip to a strip of stores that occupy the Clock Tower Plaza in Half Way Tree, I was pleasantly surprised that the reduced costs I had previously only associated with downtown Kingston had trickled down. The patrons milled around the stores and parking was tight so there were echoes of their downtown neighbours but if you are pressed for time and are nearer to that side of town, it’s an excellent stop for beauty supplies.
Of course, there are some who swear by brand name products which come with a hefty price tag. I think though that there are certain items that the brand is not as important and is a good way to save money. I was able to purchase accessories, a purse and sandals for under $3000.00. If the same items had been purchased elsewhere I am sure I would have had to pay much more.
Gassed Out
On a slightly different note, the reduction of oil prices worldwide has dominated the news for a few days now with several sectors clamouring for a further decrease to be reflected at the pumps here in Jamaica.
My take on this is that if certain gas stations are offering lower gas prices then it makes sense to make the extra effort to visit those stations and fill up for the week.
So do you shop around?
