Recently I wrote about the dangers of canned goods as they can be expired or exposed to dangerous chemicals especially if its seal is broken.
There is a very real risk of getting sick because of eating canned food.
Some people have been severely affected after eating tinned products even though others might eat the same product with no ill effects.
So although they may seem convenient they can pose a health risk. We have been fortunate not to have had many serious recalls of canned items, however, there has been a recent development in this regard.
According to information published on the GraceKennedy Group at www.gracekennedy.com, and reported in the media, there has been a recall of selected tins of Grace Baked Beans.
The recall is of nine batches of its Grace Baked Beans produced at its Grace Food Process and affects 300 gram cans.
Mr. Andrew Ho, Senior General Manager, Manufacturing stated that “Through routine internal checks the company identified irregularities with the product, manifested in the swelling of some cans. We have therefore decided to recall the specific batches mentioned to protect our consumers and are also taking all necessary steps to address the irregularities.” He explained that there is a remote probability that the batches identified may cause adverse health consequences.
The company issued a statement on their website in which they stated that they wish to assure all consumers that their safety is paramount, and that this recall does not affect any other batches of the Grace Baked Beans products outside of the ones identified.
If you have purchased a tin of Grace Baked Beans and you want to ensure it is safe to consume check the can code number which is stamped in black at one end of the can.
The affected codes are:
15JU121GD BK
BB 2016/12/12
15JU112 GD BK
BB 2016/12/11
15JU111 GD BK
BB 2016/12/11
15JU102 GD BK
BB 2016/12/10
15JU101 GD BK
BB 2016/12/10
Refunds
It is important then if you have bought the product and have not yet consumed it to take it back to the point of purchase for a refund.
My concern is that some persons might have long since consumed the product without examining the tin for the codes.
It’s great though that GraceKennedy has taken steps to ensure the safety of consumers. It also makes me wonder what other companies are doing to make sure that their products are being routinely inspected!
It is vital that consumers take necessary precautions in order to safeguard their health.
