Can you afford a cruise?

Author : teriann

It’s a vacation dream. You sail away from home and discover new places. You can travel in groups and turn it in a family reunion or you can have a couples getaway.

Of course, the cost of a cruise might make it seem to be out the reach of the average Jamaican.  I decided to do some research and see if I could determine the true cost for a cruise.

Cost

One particular cruise advertised prices that exceeded $80,000 per person. This price was for a 8 day and 7 night stay on a cruise liner which destinations included Columbia, Panama and  Costa Rica.

Now that seems like a lot of money but bear in mind that the fee includes  accommodation, meals (excluding drinks), entertainment, gratuities, port charges and taxes.

Of course, there are other cruises which cost less.

I found that if you were willing to compromise on cabin size, number of meals offered, length of stay and destination then you would pay less.

If the cruise is for the Caribbean then you could pay a low of $60,000 per person and enjoy the ambiance of our island neighbours.  However, if you are interested in more exotic destinations such as Europe, then be prepared to dip deeply in your savings!

Hidden Costs

Before you run ahead and buy your tickets though, it is important to count all the costs of a cruise.  The tickets might suggest that the price is all-inclusive but it often does not cover the entire cost of the cruise.

The package you pay for the cruise does not include: departure tax payable at departure at the pier, optional shore excursions, travel insurance, tips for porters, drivers, tour and site guides.

Alcoholic beverages and wine are not included in the cruise fares on most lines (with the exception of some luxury lines and river cruises). Plus, many will also charge for soda, bottled water, certain juices and specialty coffees (cappuccinos, lattes and espressos). Your drink tab can quickly add up as you’ll be paying restaurant, not grocery store, prices for your beverages.

You can also be charged for some on-board activities not included in your ticket cost . These can include spa services such as  massages.

Laundry and dry cleaning services are also offered at an additional cost.

I think considering to go on a cruise is something that you need to plan carefully for as there are many costs to consider!

So can you afford a cruise? Drop me a line!
