How many times have you passed those who are asking for money on the street?
Many of the street beggars have obvious deformities while others appear to be able bodied. At times it is difficult to decide who is in genuine need and who is just trying to pull off a ‘scam’.
A good way to check is to offer something else besides money. Perhaps a warm cooked meal or tinned products (with easy open lid of course) can be offered. If these items are rebuffed chances are the beggars are not really in need and are just soliciting funds to support their lifestyle.
Donation Options
If you are not comfortable with handing out food items to strangers on the street, there are other options available.
You could donate items or money to several local reputable charity organizations. This will ensure that the food and other items donated will be put to good use even if you don’t directly see who has benefited from your donation.
Some organizations have donation boxes on display for consumers to donate funds and this can include change given from a purchase.
Budgeting for Donations
In order to ensure that your donations do not put you in the poorhouse, it is important to set aside an amount of money that you will use to make donations to charity organizations.
Each member of the family can be encouraged to pledge a set amount each month and at the end of the year or during a six month period, donate the money to a charitable cause adopted by the family.
Donations do not need to be in the form of cash. If your budget is so tight that you can not find extra funds, then why not try giving of your time?
Many children’s homes would benefit from visits from adults to play and interact with the children.
There are many practical things you can donate that could be collected from friends and family members.
Often used clothing and toys in good condition can be donated to the children’s homes.
So the next time you pass someone on the street begging for something, remember to think about how you can help the less fortunate!
How do you give generously without breaking your budget? Let me hear from you!
