Hellshire Scare!

Author : teriann

What is happening to our lovely beach?

A trip to the Hellshire beach has always been a relaxing experience. So imagine my horror when I read an article in the Sunday Gleaner which described the high level of contamination of the water!

Truth be told I always knew that those waters were not crystal clear. However, according to the report, partially treated sewage is being leaked into the water by an unidentified source. The contamination might not be as bad as some other places but where will we draw the line?

Something must be done now to identify the source of the leak and protect us from its effects.

If we don’t do something soon we will reap the bitter consequences of our inability to protect our natural resources. What do you say?

Dont people have to pay to go Hellshire now, let those people collecting the money clean up the beach and pay for cleaning what else is to be cleaned, so much things in ja need to take care of but is mainly talk no action. Dont them have a ministry that is over the protection of our natural resources also to identify the leaks and causes

Wheres the sewage coming from ? find those ppl and let them pay for the clean up, how about
some of the civil servants in the evironmental dept be made as inspectors/investigators of these things, many civil servants does nothing but shows up late to work, stay texting friends, chit chat each others business, and ignore phone calls going in, train them for out in the field earning their mthly salaries.

I agree Tika that it is clear that there needs to be action now!

hellshire has been filthy for many years. what exactly is the scare? The people who actually live there where do you think they put their waste? We seem to believe everything the foreigners tell us, but fail to think and research for ourselves and on our own behalf.

  5. u know it says:

how can hellshire be ‘relaxing’? …i’m from spanish town and i’ve never even put my little toe in that water…eeewww. We all know its not clean. When i go to hellshire is straight fish and festival mi go fah…

  6. aj says:

This “leak” has been going on for at least 30 years. UDC do your job please.

  7. AshLee says:

*LOL* I can’t believe ppl actually think Hellshire water was clean enough to swim… I see ppl in the water whenever i do make it there, but i just figure they don’t care or don’t know much better… I haven’t been in that water since i was maybe 12 years old. I just go for the seafood and prices are relatively good.

Honestly Hellshire needs a good clean-up PERIOD! Not just of the contaminated water but also of the people and the way business is run over there… it’s become such a hassle going there – Too many hagglers and you cannot lay on a chair without 50 thousand ppl coming to ask you to buy something! I get the hussle but mi jesas!

  8. Rich says:

…maybe that’s why the fish and festival taste so good!

  9. teriann says:

Rich I never thought of that maybe that is the ‘extra flavour’ not sure I want that in my fish though!

Whether there’s a leak at Hellshire or not, it just adds to the massive pollution flowing out from Kingston Harbour and down the coast. Failure of the State for the last 30years to manage liquid and solid waste period!
On the social side, after my last run in with hustlers almost ended in violence, I refuse to expose anyone in my family to that madness again. Put some coast guard officers/rangers/marine police to bring order to a socially neglected, and lawless public beach.

  15. I’m so happy you wrote about this. Will you be adding to it in the future?

  16. teriann says:

Sure I will report if I hear of any new developments

aww..too much headache, who can be bothered with this banana republic call jamaica ,anymore…dam people dem too terrible..i took my 2 daughters to negril 7 mile beach ,couple years back ,just to show them real beach as opposed to the fake ones in foreign lands…so next i skipped over to bluefields my childhood haunts, even though im from mandeville,i saw grown men with their little usual rickity huts along the roads, but to my suprise a dead dog floating in the once beautiful water, yet none of these so call men would even try to get the dead animal out..it look as if that was a way of life for these folks, just dont care,no big deal to them…i wish this jamaica is redeamable..but im having doubts..
