Using toll roads – is it really worth it?

Are you planning a trip to the country anytime soon? If the answer is yes then you have a decison to make before you begin your trip. You need to decide if you will take the toll road or the free alternative routes.

Toll Roads

The benefit of using toll roads are of course well documented. They cut travel time in half and have a better road surface. This is very attractive to most motorists who choose to take the toll roads.

In Jamaica, toll roads were a relatively new experience and received mixed reactions. Some persons felt that road travel should be free while others decided that they prefer to pay for the convenience of smoother road surfaces and shorter travel times.

Another major advantage of the toll roads are that they reduce traffic congestion. They provide motorists with options so that everyone is not forced to take the same route which can cause major delays. Fuel consumption is also lowered when using the toll road.

The Cost of the Journey

The loudest critics of toll roads are those who protest the cost.  Many of the toll road charges can be increased peroidically which can put a major dent in your finances. As a result many motorists opt to avoid the toll road in an effort to save money.

The North -South section of the Highway has only been open a few months and already motorists are facing a huge increase. According to an article published in The Gleaner August 25, 2016, ” Jamaica North-South Highway Company, operators of the highway, has now applied for them to be raised. The company has requested that road users be hit with the maximum charge that is allowable.”

How much is allowable? According to the article it’s too much!

Instead of paying $915 for the entire journey from Caymanas to Mammee Bay, drivers of motor cars  will be required to pay $1,360 to drive on that route. Those who drive SUVs and vans will pay up to $2730.

While the proposed hike in fees are being met with much resistance it is important to note that the alternative route is not always safe during heavy rainfall so the toll roads might be the best option.

Is it worth the cost?

The bottom line is that if motorists want to continue to enjoy the ease of travel that they receive while using the toll roads they have to pay the price. If the cost becomes too exorbitant then it’s back to the old route with pleasure as long as you get to your destination.

It is well worth using the toll road!, despite the price, I would travel too road all the time. The other roads are full of potholes and are more costly in the end, due to front-end damages and suspension damages. I wish all the main roads were tolled….

    Hi Paul,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the issue! Some commuters do prefer the toll road for the reason you mentioned. I am not sure we could afford ALL the roads to be toll! However I understand you mean you want a better surface for the road. Please keep sharing!
