Unity is strength. A simple but powerful concept. If the islands in the Caribbean could capitalise on that, we would become a force to reckon with on the world market. However, recently there has been a ripple in the fabric of our unity.
The comments of the Trinidad Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, have created a backlash of intense criticism. She stated at a press conference recently that if she offered to help other Caribbean islands to cope with the aftermath of tropical storm Tomas, it would have to be for the benefit of Trinidad and Tobago.
A lot of people were outraged at her comments and considered them to be inappropriate and inconsiderate. Others have said she was just saying out loud what other islands have been thinking for years. Why should we help them? What’s in it for us?
While those questions reveal a side of humanity which some might find distasteful, the truth is it happens all the time in the business sector. Most businesses are only interested in the bottom line. Unfortunately there exists a human side that too often is ignored.
I think we should help others just for the simple reason that we are all in this together!
Just my two cents. Whatever happens next the ball is in their court. Will you join in the boycott of Trinidad products?
