Should parents pay for extra lessons?

Author : teriann

Okay, here is the problem, your child attends a school that begins at 7 am. and ends at 12 noon, how does the teacher cover all the content in the various subjects?  The solution is that the teacher offers extra lessons!

The GSAT examinations which determine where a child will be placed for high school will be held on the 24th and 25th of March.  Many parents find it difficult to pay for the extra lessons their child needs in order to fully prepare for the exam.

It was a pleasure to read about Crescent Primary school where the teachers were providing the extra lessons at no charge.  This is certainly a breath of fresh air amid all the stories of greed and corruption that have assaulted the airways in recent years.

This made me think of how wonderful it would be if all schools, whether they were on a shift system or not, adopted a similar policy and provided lessons at no cost.

This would certainly help parents who could be assured that whatever their financial situation their child would be given a chance to succeed.

So what’s your take on the issue?  Read full article http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20110221/lead/lead2.html#

If you can afford it go ahead!.. or all parent should bring this matter to the attention of the education ministry. and find out why classes are so short and how are their kids is to prepare for these exams!.

BIG NO! I took common entrance when I was only 9 years and 1 month old in 1979, I am from deep rural part of the country in St. Elizabeth. I passed on my first attempt. There was no extra lessons. I think this is a ploy to get extra monies, so teachers short change the students and forcing them to pay for extra lessons. The extra lessons should be freeeeeeeeeee.

Well, 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon sounds like a private arrangement – certianly not the public school system. If one is not happy with that then go somewhere that offers something closer to what you expect.
I do have an issue with the ‘extra lessons’ because if a parent chooses not to send a child to extra lesson, the student will be short changed because not everything is covered in the regularly scheduled classes. Parents should get more involved in the education of their children – go through assigned texts and make sure they cover everything. It can be time consuming. If you can’t do this, then you are coerced into enrolling in extra lesson classes. If someone goes beyond their regularly scheduled hours, it should be their decision whether they want to be paid for their services or not.

Well Las, in Jamaica some schools run by the Government operate on a shift basis. So the school has two shifts, morning and evening. The evening shift usually begins at 1:00 p.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. This is done because the school population can not all be accommodated at the same time.

What about those students who are not able to catch on quickly? They might need the extra help! (for free of course)

WHY in JAMAICA? ESPECIALLY this GENERATION seems to WANT the GOVERNMENT to ADHERE to their DEMANDS in almost every-thing FREE

As a parent the RESPONSIBILTY and WELFARE of your CHILD or CHIDLREN is on YOU.

My PARENTS had to pay for EXTRA LESSONS or TUTORING, and that was in the EARLIER 60s. And was my to help prepere me for my COMMON- ENTRANCE EXAMINATION. It was even HARDER then to find 10 shillings a month.

The CONFUSION and BACKLASH started when JAMAICA RENOVATED the EDUCATION system, of which was working EFFECTIVELY then.

So now this the SECENIRO of TRIAL and ERRORS, until now they cannot find the REMEDY.

How can one HOME SCHOOL/ When he or she DOES not even QUALIFY to teach HIM- or HER SELF

We are having ENOUGH with ILLITERACY. So why CULTIVATE more?

  7. A fascinating discussion is worth comment. I think that you
need to write more on this topic, it may not be a taboo matter but typically
people don’t speak about these topics. To the next! Many thanks!!
