I was feeling a bit under the weather but I was determined that I would attend the Liguanea Art Fair held at Liguanea Plaza in Kingston on April 21, 2013. I had only planned to stay a short time but I was pleasantly surprised at what I saw and the minutes turned to hours.
The sweeping tents and dazzling display of artwork captivated my interest and I enjoyed each sensational exhibit. There were many artists displaying their pieces and they were quite happy to interact with their appreciative audience. There were several industrial size fans which provided a welcome breeze and the soothing music completed the idyllic scene.
The cost of some of the more high end art works was well above the reach of ordinary Jamaicans such as a painting of Usain Bolt going for $200,000. However, there were more moderately priced items such as photos from renown photographer Richard Moo Young being sold for $500.00 while his black and white drawings were priced at $1500.00.
There were several companies present such as The Jamaica Biscuit Company who had free samples of their product. Consumers were also treated with giveaway baskets and promotional packages for kids.
The creative corner also allowed children to create their own works of art. A display on origami caught my eye as a group of kids of various ages gathered to watch the ancient paper art being demonstrated.
As I watched the mixed group I noticed that although a few people were buying the general atmosphere was one of gaiety and ease. There were no reminders of bills or taxes as consumers lazily idled around each tent and admired the creativity of the pieces on display.
There was no entrance fee and yet a number of people stood outside and did not enter but begged those going inside for money. I suppose that was the only thing that marred the day but it is also a reminder that although some were there enjoying art there are numerous Jamaicans who desperately need assistance.
Did you go to the art fair? Let me know how you enjoyed the day!
