Fashion Forward smart shopping for the plus size consumer.

If you like fashion as much as I do, one of the most frustrating things to experience is that a lot of the styles seem to cater towards the more slightly built woman.

There seems to be limited choices for the more curvy fashionable female shopper. True there are plus size stores in Jamaica but even if you can find the right style of clothes often the price tag is staggering.

Recently I asked a store clerk why a dress in a bigger size was priced higher than the same dress in a smaller size.
She regarded the price tag with a puzzled look on her face then she surmised that it had taken more material to construct the larger sized garment so that cost had to be passed on to the consumer.

Regardless of the reason, it seems that plus size women have to struggle with high prices in order to purchase clothes that fit.
So imagine my delight when I discovered a store that not only had a variety of sizes but prices that I could afford!

I had no real plans to go shopping but as I passed the store, a unobtrusive sign quietly proclaimed to shoppers that they were having a fifty percent sale.

I have never been able to pass by a sale although it is not often they are worth the visit. So I entered the store, New Liguanea Fashions shop 7a, which is located in Liguanea Plaza on Old Hope Road.

I saw a wide assortment of clothes in a variety of sizes so I asked the very pleasant sales clerk which items were on sale.
She replied that a ten percent reduction was being offered on all items but that the fifty percent discount was only being applied to suits.

I was pleasantly surprised by the range of sizes they offered as they had suits from small all the way up to 3x.
I was also happy that the suits which would normally retail for $5000 and $6000 were being sold for $3000 and $2500.

The suits appeared to be of good quality and did not appear to be shop worn or damaged. They also had skirts on the sale which were being sold for $1000.00.

If you are plus size and worried about the high cost of buying clothes I have other suggestions.

Although there are stores that cater to plus sizes such as Smart Woman on Constant Spring Road, there are other stores that carry bigger sizes.

So the best thing to do as a smart shopper is to ask the store clerk if there are other sizes as they sometimes store the bigger sizes in the back of the store.

What’s your take on the issue? Let me hear from you!

My take is that Jamaican entrepreneurs are stupid. They take on foreign fashion trends with no eye to the reality of their core consumer. Fat people LIVE. Like GAY PEOPLE, we are out of the closet! In fact, we can fill up a WHOLE CLOSET, but the stores insist we dont exist! Smart Woman is for RICH smart women. Even when we are rich, we want to be really smart and get Bargains.

Where do Queen Latifah, and all the other fat divas get clothes from? I bet they all had to lose weight, not to get fit, but to keep in clothes!

Same problem with shoes. Every store is full of size 6-9. You cannot get a good looking 10 Wide to save your life. IF you find one, it is like it was made in the dark ages. They buy small shoes that cannot sell, knowing full well that the majority of Jamaican woman are size 8-12.

Comb the ENTIRE North Coast and see if you can find a Diet Pepsi or Coke in the average roadside grocery. YET, by now, ALL of us know about diabetes, we know that TOURISTS guzzle Coke and Pepsi like water, and that they are also on Weight Loss Kicks. But NO, Not a diet soda to be found unless you do a Magnum PI search. Not even in the tourist meccas.

At least you have given me hope that if I live in Kingston I have an alternative instead of depending on my sister in law to send barrel!
