Be Careful about Buying Tainted Ackee!

Author : teriann

Maybe we need to start climbing our own trees and picking our own ackees? That’s how I felt when I read the article entitled “Beware of Unfit Canned Ackee” in  The Gleaner published May 14, 2010. The articler stated that 40 cases of processed ackee had ‘disappeared’ from a factory in St. Elizabeth, which was under investigation.  The Bureau of Standards has since then  issued an alert to anyone purchasing canned ackee in brine.

It is important to note that the company did contract packaging.  This means that they sell to others who repackage the ackee with their own label this will make it difficult to track the tainted products.  Who knows where they will resurface next?  According to the article, the products were not tested and The Bureau of Standards cannot guarantee their wholesomeness.  I could just feel my stomach muscles clench when I read that as I could just imagine what that could mean for the unwary diner.

The truth is this kind of thing  really hurts the legitamate producers of canned ackee.  I hope that the relevant authorites ensure that this does not happen again. What do you think? Let me hear from you!
