I suppose everyone is shaking their heads in disbelief at the title of my blog. After all once you are saving money then nothing should be off limits. It might seem that way but I have different take on it.
Many stores simply raise their prices then proclaim that they are ‘dropping’ their prices significantly in order to entice consumers.
Often the discounted prices are deceptive as you could purchase the same item cheaper somewhere else if you investigate.
Sure, a discount on a great product is great. But a cheap imitation of that great product is no deal at all, no matter how cheap it is.
So what items should you be careful of buying even if they are advertised as being discounted?
- Be careful of buying discounted medication. Sometimes medication is expired or about to expire when they go on sale. There are also some cases of dubious origins of some of these medications.
- Carefully examine discounted shoes before buying them. I can’t tell how many dry rotted shoes I eagerly purchased for a rock bottom price only to be disappointed later when they fell apart.
- Discounted cosmetics are often caked and not a good option for the discerning shopper.
- Refurbished electronic devices. These are very popular in the United States and sometimes they find their way to Jamaican stores. These items were used then sent to the factory to be repaired and sent to be resold at a lower price. Often the problem in the device resurfaces weeks or months later.
- Check the thread count of discounted sheet sets. Sometimes the cheap sheet set is also the scratchy and easily frayed one!
So enjoy your discounted prices but be careful that you don’t buy first and regret it later!
On a side note, the chaos experienced by shoppers during the Black Friday shopping in America was not reflected in the Jamaican version of the event.
Although crowds gathered for sales and cash registers rang merrily there was no chaos due to the smooth organization at the Mall and Village Plazas!
Happy Shopping!
