The Cost of Beauty

Author : teriann

There is an old adage which says, ‘Beauty knows no pain.”

It refers to the lengths women will go in order to maintain their appearance. One of the challenges of beauty maintenance is the cost.  In Jamaica, there are many salons which cater for those who want to maintain a beauty regimen.

Why are beauty salons so popular?

Although the recession has affected this sector, resulting in increased costs for the services, beauty salons continue to enjoy support. According to the cosmetologists I spoke to, their customers make sacrifices so that they can afford various services.

I think part of the reason that beauty salons remain so popular is because it represents an outlet for those who are weighed down by the pressures in society.  When persons look  their best, then their overall mood improves and this spills over in their life.

Women are not the only ones who use beauty salons as a stress reliever, an increasingly more men are making use of certain of their services.  As a result many salons offer a wide variety of services including waxing and massages to encourage new customers.

Expensive beauty services

Since the salons are experiencing such high traffic, you might think they would offer affordable prices but that depends on where you choose to go for the service.

If you go into any salon that is uptown,  a basic shampoo can cost you up to $1400. Additional services such as cutting or waxing can also increase your bill.  These salons are usually placed in an air conditioned building which features comfortable seating and hot and cold water.

How can you save money?

Beauty care does not need to be expensive, if you don’t mind doing a little investigation.  Research several salons and you will find that the prices vary so it is not difficult to find one that will fit your budget.

It is important while doing the research that you don’t compromise on the quality of haircare just to save a few dollars.  The cosmetologist must be properly trained in hair care in order to avoid any problems that might develop because of using ‘cheap labour’.

The other way to save money, is of course to do it yourself. If you have the time and are willing to learn the skill of hair care, then you can purchase the beauty supplies and style your hair at home.

So how do you save money while still keeping up your appearance?

Let me hear from you!
