I try to be a positive person, after all living each day totally focused on the problems is bound to drive any sane person over the edge.
The truth is though that there are many experiences that consumers face on a daily basis that makes life very difficult. Many of the negative experiences could have been avoided if companies paid more attention to the needs of their customers.
So I have compiled a list of the worst consumer experiences based on my experiences as well as those of family and friends.
- Waiting a long time for a service. (I have written about this before as a long wait time has to be factored in almost any transaction).
- Incompetent/Disrespectful sales persons. (Please companies train your staff).
- Poor quality goods. (This means that they fall apart after a few uses and you have wasted your money).
- Sales that feature damaged/soiled items that no one wants.
- Irregularity of prices. (Sometimes there is more than one price on the item which can be confusing although I always say if there are two prices then I will pay the lower one).
- Inconsiderate/Inflexible procedures. (One such procedure might be that customers can not use the restroom unless they make a purchase or inflexible terms for returning goods).
- Prices not clearly displayed. (One prominent wholesaler displays the lowest price of the item if bought in bulk in yellow and bold ink, however the price of a single item is not highlighted and can be easily be mistaken for the lower price as it is written much smaller).
Of course this list does not outline every negative experiences consumers have had in the Jamaican marketplace.
Once when I was waiting in a long line at the supermarket, the cashier waited until I was almost finished putting my goods down to be cashed to tell me she was closed. Imagine how simple it would have been to inform the customers of these kind of actions before they had wasted their time.
If we are to compete globally and be more effective at taking Jamaica to the next level we must address our customer service issues.
So did I identify your worst consumer experience?
Let me hear from you!
