Nicole’s Wrath

I watched the news in horror as it showed in detail the devastating effects of tropical storm Nicole to several areas across the island. Those images will be forever etched in my mind.  So many stories of loss of life and property stir me to ask the question, ‘Why?’

Why does it take a tragedy for us to realize that some areas are not meant to be residential? Why are people allowed to build homes in areas that lack proper drainage? Why are our bridges not being properly reinforced? Why isn’t something more being done to help to relocate those who live in areas that are basically inviting disaster?

As taxpayers, we need some assurance that there are plans in place to protect us from future storms.

It is this writer’s humble opinion that there needs to be some assessment of the danger citizens face during these storms and if necessary forced relocation of those whose homes are perched on the side of gullies.

I don’t want to see any more lives lost that could have been saved! What do you say?

I share the comments of the writer. I do believe that when a storm or any disaster is approaching that people who are living in vulnerable areas should be forced to relocate or put in shelters as the adults not only endanger their lives but the lives of their children too. This cannot continue! too many lives are being lost unnecessarily. 7 persons from one family in not easy to deal with. The remaining family members must be traumatised and have nightmare regularly. Death is never easy, especially when its sudden. We need to start taking better care of our people. Cause when it comes down to it, we are all sisters and brothers. I hope we have all learn a lesson from this. But then again, it happens time and time again.
