Windshield Washers – Menace or Entrepreneurs?

Can you dare to refuse his offer? copyright 2010 The Gleaner

Driving in Jamaica a few things are expected, they include uneven road surfaces, traffic, the incessant noise of horns and discourteous drivers.

However, there is something else experienced by drivers on our roads; the demands of those who offer to clean our windshields.

They stand on the corners and while the cars are held hostage at the light, they demand money for their service.

I have had bad experiences with those windshield washers. Although I appreciate the fact that they are trying to make a living, I applaud the efforts being made to get them off the streets. Female drivers especially can now breathe a sigh of relief as they drive along our island roads.

I hope that there are programmes, though to assist them or we might find ourselves under a different type of assault. What do you think?

Round them up make parents accountable, if there is no parental guidance put them into programs learning a trade If mother or father is found charge them and offer them tubaligation/vasectomies. Dont mean to be harsh but the constant crime and breeding is ruining the country on top of corruption.
One recent murderer woman claims he took care of her child and was a good person, he has left back sons here on us, granted this boy may be a different person from his this murderer but its a strong chance he will walk in his fathers foot-steps. I believe first in Nature in oppose to nurture.
These boys are intimidating, and it’s sad also it reflects badly on this country. some are good children really suffering, but they need to be remove from our streets, and put into social programs where they will recieve help b4 dons, predators & crimes takes a hold of them.

It is a nuisance however, people have to eat. There kids are doing a service. For many Jamaican males, work prospects are few and far between. Yes, it is a problem and yes, it is a nuisance but what jobs can the government provide them. These kids may just turn to crime as a result. I would rather they clean my windshield than rob me at knifepoint for a few dollars. All of you sound extremely heartless in your ivory towers and provide no remedies to this problem. Just complaining which is something Jamaican people love to do but never actually follow up with action.
