The Jamaican saying, ‘Chicken Merry Hawk de near’, actually does not have anything to do with chickens. It means that when things seem to be going well, danger might be just around the corner.
Of course that’s only my interpretation but everyone knows the predatory nature of hawks and that chickens are their favourite meals. The way how things are looking these days we will have a lot of hungry hawks!
Chicken prices have been increased with the increase in grain being identified as the chief culprit for the increase. Other products will suffer as wheat prices will also affect baked products and the dairy industry.
Chicken is a staple in many Jamaican households but we might now have to find innovative ways to deal with the increase. Stews and seasoned rice can be used to compensate for having less chicken on the menu. How will you cope with the increase?

You really know how to grab people attention because when I started to read I wanted to know what will be in the end.
Great page! I come here all of the time so keep up the great work!
It is time to become vegetarians. I am 39 years old and I can eat ackee and saltfish or callalo and white rice for lunch, breakfast, dinner and snack. I was ashamed to actually see McDonalds and Burking In Jamaica. Jamaicans are getting obsese. It is not pretty.
So take the high rise in chicken as a sign.
Well, you mention here things that really made me think.
I think we all might be heading down that path Rachel!
Thanks Jackie! Keep coming back for more!
Off course chicken is a great source of protein but so are beans! Farm your own and learn to live off the land!…ie.. calloo, cabbage, carrots, peas, beans ockra, ackee. Jamaicans must learn to improvised and raise their own chicken…Alot of people may be worried about chicken prices becasue over the years Jamaicans have become americanised, ie..Burger King, Mcdonalds!!!! what da hell is going on??????take your head out the sand and go back to farming!!
Good idea, this might refresh our memory of how healthy we use to eat without meat and compare it to now, big difference indeed.
Seems my good fortune that just as they were announcing the rise in chicken prices i decided to stop eating chicken. So while i am not fully vegetarian there are many other ways that i have been supplementing my diet without chicken or chicken products. For those considering vegetarianism its not more costly than a meat diet, there are many delicious dishes that can be prepared with the variety of soy products plus our ground vegetables.
For our health’s sake we should see the rise in prises as our saviour from ill-health if we have to stop consuming chicken.
I agree Jul Cam! Let’s hear it for all the vegetarians!
By far the most concise and up to date information I found on this topic.
Great entry, which everyone should be interested. Thank you.
Thanks Gwenn! Keep visiting!
I really enjoy the information on this blog. I came across it while searching on Yahoo
Thank you , I love to read about other vegansas it gives me the strength to continue. I have about a thousand vegetarian feeds in my google reader, but I’m sure another can’t hurt!! I did manage to find a good lentil recipe here, but I’ll be sure to try yours too. Thanks!
You are most welcome Bobby!
chicken has always been a part of my diet. it’s the best source of protein for me. now if the price keeps increasing, maybe i’d try to substitute this with fish meat
Hello there, You have done a fantastic job. I will definitely digg it and personally recommend to my friends. I am sure they will be benefited from this site.
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
Hey there I am so glad I found your blog page, I really found you by mistake,
while I was browsing on Digg for something else, Anyhow I am here now and
would just like to say cheers for a fantastic post and a all round interesting blog (I also
love the theme/design), I don’t have time to look over it all at the minute but I have bookmarked it and also
included your RSS feeds, so when I have time
I will be back to read more, Please do keep up the superb jo.
