Debit Card Scam

Be careful when using the A.B.M!

Recently there has been a lot of uproar about debit card fraud in the island.

The debit card was once considered safe because you had to punch in a pin code in order to access your funds.  So it would appear that as long as you kept that number private, you were assured that your funds were secure.

Well our thieves are becoming more sophisticated. They now use devices that can take your account information from the card.  A lot of people use the ABM (Automated Banking Machine) for quick cash.  These devices are sometimes installed on or in these machines by unscrupulous persons and are used to record information in order to access your account.

Since the Christmas shopping season will soon begin, it is extremely important that you bear the following safety guidelines when using an ABM machine:

Examine the machine; do not enter if any suspicious device is mounted near the card slot or door.

Ensure you are placing the card in the correct slot.

Do not allow anyone to assist you to use the machine.

Cover your card numbers as much as possible with your hand when inserting it into the machine.

Keep your receipts.

Avoid using machines that are poorly lit or in a deserted area.

This scheme has been rampant in the US as well (at least on and off)… The main problem is that the device used to “copy” the information from the ABM (or ATM) machines is easily attainable through the internet.

We all have to be careful, wherever we are…

who feels it knows it. Got scammed in North AMerica few years ago & lost 1000 dollars, bank refused to repay. My only consolation was that I caught it before it got worse, I also had cash deposit to make to the a/c & good thing I followed instinct & delayed it, it wouldve been worse. I learned my lesson. I now have few rules which work well for me :

never use debit in stores to pay for items, use cash or credit card (you have greater protection/insurance with c/card).

if I need cash, I use ABM/ATM located at Bank premises..I never use off the road machines. Call me paranoid, but I only use machines at my bank (or branches), never other banks.

    protect your pin always

Always be consious of your surrounding..if someones too close..or directly behind you, or acting strange. I always look around well before doing a cash transaction.

Always remember to take your card- a friend lost $ once after leaving card in machine.

Always remember to take your cash- once I was in a hurry for airport & actually took the card & receipt & left the cash. Fortunately it wasnt much, & it happened yrs ago- LoL.

Due to the serious thievery here I always thought installing these machine outside of the tourist areas, supermarkets, banks or hospitals were not a bad idea, howeve putting them elsewhere was not safe , to me its an
opportunity for theives to rob and kill you.
I have a card used for emergency in a very
safe medium I would not even use it at a supermarket
