Stay safe while you shop!

Author : teriann

A number of people are shopping this time of year as they prepare for back to school.  Summer deals also tempt consumers and provide an opportunity to save money.  However, it is important to be careful while shopping though since there are dangers as you shop during the summer season.

Tips for staying safe

I have noticed many people on their phone while shopping and this is a very bad habit. Not only does it show poor manners to talk loudly, it can prove to be a distraction. It’s better to focus on your surroundings so that you know what’s happening around you at all times.

Bear in mind that shoppers should always keep one hand free. Of course this is because when you carry a lot of bags or packages in both hands, you are more vulnerable.

If possible store packages in your car instead of taking them from store to store. Most stores have policies against taking inside  bags with purchases from other stores.

It is also a good idea to shop in pairs whenever possible as thieves are less likely to strike when there are a lot of people around. It also means another pair of eyes to ensure that you keep track of your purchases.

Watch your bags

I am one of those who carry what we call ‘house and land’ in our bags.  However, these huge bags can be attractive to thieves so it is important to never leave it unattended. I have seen ladies resting their bags on counters as they check out items.

It is much better to carry a smaller purse that can be stowed away in a pocket as its much easier to keep track of than a bag. If you drive remember to never leave your bag on the passenger seat.

Ensure that you have your keys ready before you get to your car and be aware of who is around as you put away your purchases. If taking public transportation,  try to place all your purchases in one unmarked bag that you can easily keep track of instead of a number of smaller bags.

Use your Card

While some merchants prefer cash it is not safe to travel with large amounts of cash so use your debit or credit card as much as possible.  If you are travelling with cash, don’t keep it all in one place.  By doing this thieves would find it much harder if they tried to take your money.
