Bad Ackee or Wicked People?

Author : teriann

As I sit to eat my favourite Saturday breakfast of ackee and salt fish with breadfruit, I lament the much abused fruit, the ackee.

It is well known that ackee, if it is forced open can cause deaths.  That simple truth has seemingly evaded those who continue this dangerous practice which endangers lives.

The news report of 32 deaths has shaken my belief that deep down Jamaicans  care for each other more than they care about earning the Almighty dollar!  Apparently, those who are selling the improperly opened ackees must also not care about the risk of killing off their future clientele.

Of course, some deaths can also be because of genuine ignorance of the legitimacy of the poisonous claims of the fruit.

Whatever the reason, the poor fruit continues to be under attack, when in truth it is ignorance and sometimes greed that causes the real problems.

What are your thoughts on how we can prevent more deaths from eating improperly opened ackee?

There is nothing wrong with ackee. the problem is with the Agriculture department and the uneducated fools who are so greedy for money!.
The Agricultural department must make a video and brochures and distribute the brochures to every house hold in the country about the proper way ackee should be used!..

Its not just that ackee is poisoned when its not open. but also if there is a severe drought. that also will make ackee poison. because it did not get to go through its normal process before it was open. so people have to take precaution when cooking ackee that are picked in high drought areas!.
