Drag Racing: Vernam Rebirth – drag racing is alive and well!

Author : cmunroe

A hectic work-weekend didn’t allow me to, according to my rastafarian friends, ‘fulljoy’ myself at Vernamfield on Sunday. So adopting the drag racing theme, I was allowed to pass through rather briefly. My e.t. on location was a few rpms more than an hour, but in my 0-60 experience, I absorbed ample portions of what was available in the motorsports menu.

What required no further clarity, was the fact that Vernamfield needed an event of the stature of Vernam Rebirth, more than how Jamaica needs quality leaders! The fans ‘rolled out’ and the competitors ‘rolled out’ even more.

The forgotten Sunday vibes were rekindled and like a fork-tongued flamed, the joy the revving machines inspired, was visible as the rising crescendo of shouts of approval could be heard in May Pen each time the machines sped down the quarter  mile.

Honda-heads will love this machine. ‘Dem-Dem’ (Likkle T built) to the drag racing world!

The Williams brothers were in the building – machine chilling awaiting battle!

How much manpower do you need to push a 1000 horsepower Skyline? Asafa’s machine was assaulted by gremlins.

And the Picture of the Year goes to? Damian ‘Damage’ Allen stood tall. He climbed on the shoulders of giants as he etched his name permanently into Jamaica’s Drag Racing history book. Damage cracked the 8 seconds barrier! Machine! (He was actually standing on the machine).

Looking forward to the next edition!
