I am in the land of the free and the home of the brave (USA) and being a car guy, each time I make the trip, I have to make mental adjustments inorder to maintain my sanity. When I am on the rock (Jamaica), Japanese imports rule, with a few European cars here and there, but I still do the whiplash routine (head flung back to see what just passed), if I spot a ‘clean’ version of a ‘fast car’. If possible, I will do a turn around and inspect the specimen more closely, with camera in tow to snap a picture or two.
Chevrolet Corvette ZO6
Imagine my discombobulated state, now that I am in the Mecca of capitalism, the free market’s largest and greatest advocate. Here, it is a level playing field and all the automakers who can meet the standards are invited. My turmoil begins as soon as I drive out from the house. An Infiniti G35 whizzes by, a Mustang GT 500 is parked in front of a store, a Honda S 2000 is at the gas station, a BMW M3 is in the next lane, two Corvettes are parked at Hooters, a Ferrari with a wicked sounding exhaust note just turned the corner and the journey just began. On Thursday, I couldn’t help myself. I saw several Corvettes at the Maroone Chevrolet dealer and an inner force instructed me to pull over for a closer inspection. I obliged, went over and took a few pictures. I harassed the sales rep. so I was allowed to take pictures of the Corvette’s small block V8 and its interior. With visions of a 505hp Corvette ZO6 parked in my driveway, I left the dealer a new man.
But seriously, I cannot continue like this. I cannot afford a chauffeur, so I can relax and just enjoy the ride and it would not be smart to drive with my eyes closed! I am beginning to see a bus in my future!
