Happy New Year!!! I sincerely hope you kept your sanity throughout the festive season and you employed wisdom and chose, realistic, achievable goals. We are 2 days into 2014 – are you still on track? Ok, my question might be premature, so I will reserve it for now. But, as we all know, time waits on no man, so ignite the fuel, get your motor running and move towards your goals with alacrity!
The August 2013 issue of Road and Track is one which I have read countless times. In that issue I met, in detail, the Porsche 918 Spyder. Motorsports fans, like yourselves, might jolly-well be familiar with this awesome machine, so the extensive discourse, dissecting its F1-type connecting rods, pistons and Star Wars-embedded technology, will not be pursued here. What cannot be side-stepped, however, is the fact that, this machine has embraced what the average motor-head would have discarded a few years ago!
If honesty is our colleague we may assume courage and admit that we are not particularly happy or excited about ethanol/electricity providing fire to propel our chariots of speed. We are civilized, decent law-abiding citizens, which explains why we were not sprinting to join the Green Revolution!
This machine, however, has, like an iceberg to the Titanic, capsized all we thought we knew! A lot can be said about the machine, but I would have a difficulty selecting where to begin. But think about this – according to the reports, the Spyder’s 4.6-liter hybrid V-8, generates a combined 887hp and its two electric motors make more power than a significant number of the machines that blast around Dover’s 1.6 miles on race-day (127hp + 154hp)!

Will we see this machine on a race-track, in competition, anytime soon? That I cannot say. Would I purchase a Porsche 918 Spyder? If the ‘nodding donkey’ in the backyard continues to pump out the ‘black gold’ – the answer to the second question is YES – absolutely – show me where to sign!
Yes, the future is here. What do you think about this machine?
