Drag Racing: 30lbs of boost? – Test and Tune is this Sunday!

I have a friend who, many years ago, was a ‘Nissan-man’. He has since switched and adopted a new marque – Honda! Blasphemy – treachery is rampant! Stay focused. When he was chest-deep in the pursuit of speed, he acquired a Nissan B13 and hurriedly crammed a SR20 DET in its stomach. It was a rapid little beast which had myriad issues.

Car guys have a tendency of asking, what I will refer to as cliche-questions. For example, if you are in the process of building a turbo-bred monster, a cliche-question would be – “How much boost you a plan fi run?” At an early stage in my friends growth as a certified speed-junkie, he decided to build an ogre with stellar boost-capacity.

Boost, discussed at that time, considering our infancy in research and development, would involve modest proportions – anywhere from 5lbs – 20lbs. So, imagine their shock when my friend was consulted about his project – “How much boost you a plan fi run?” His response, in a matter of fact way – 30lbs! His reply prompted an extended, as if someone died, moment of silence and then reality interjected – ” 30lbs of boost?” – the laughter was widely distributed! A nickname was born – 30lb (say – Totty pound)!

Biggie Bee

We are currently in the ninth month of the year we refer to as 2014. The laughter subsided long ago and 30lbs of boost being crammed into an Edelbrock intake manifold is commonplace. Computer wizardry, directed by the thought processes of tuners – Chungy, Biggie Bee, Xavier and others, regulate mayhem and allow exorbitant lbs of boost to ignite blur-like elapsed times along any officially established 1320ft!

The 4th edition in the 2014 Nestle Supligen Drag Racing Series, will shred rubber in the burnout box on October 12, at Drag Racers’ Paradise – Vernamfield, Clarendon. Drag Challlenge #4 provides an ocean of optimistic opportunity for drag racers – a chance at redemption for some, continuation of dominance for others, or simply, widening the experience horizon. Whatever your motivation, if going fast in a straight line is your entree, the holy concrete beckons!

But, before the Class- winning trophy is claimed and you get lost in the warm embrace of your screaming fans, preparation is essential. The process of fine-tuning a speed demon is an endless chore and as another saying recites – if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail!

Fortunately, the NDRC is proactive and apparently the organization has adopted the view that early preparation is essential. On Sunday (7th) Vernamfield will be reverberating with soul-inspiring, spine-tingling sounds, emanating from glory-seeking combustion chambers! The party begins at 1pm and the rave extends to 6pm. Any amount of boost you plan to ‘run’ can be tested and the results assessed within the specified time. Boost or bust! Five solid hours of mechanized ecstasy! And there is absolutely no fee for admission – FREE !
