A nail-biting finish – Bathurst 2015.

There are times when we exhaust several hours and too many minutes, counting down to the day, when a major duel that we anticipate will unfold. I can recall when Doug ‘Hollywood’ Gore got his impressive DTM Audi TT-R. I do not think the JRDC had enough hands to sell tickets for the debut race of the TT-R on Dover soil!

The anticipation and expectation surpassed tangible levels. It was almost frightening, scary, but inexplicably pleasing at the same time. We expected gargantuan battles. I will admit that the battles materialised, yes, but there were also those moments when the cataclysmic eruption we anticipated was replaced by a muffled ppsstt from a tasteless beverage – thanks to a collision (remember that one?) or the usual mechanical failure.

But, there are also times when pedal is applied to metal and the mettle of both man and machine are tested repeatedly and ultimately, only the strong will survive and enjoy the champagne shower. Motor-racing drivers are not necessarily the most rational beings. The nature of the sport dictates that aggression and a non-compromising stance are prerequisites for success occasionally. So, we embrace the moments when Mandeville-type heads prevail (cool heads) and a joust to the final turn, of the final lap occurs, displaying drama similar to that which was witnessed during the O. J. Simpson trial!

The 2015 edition of the Bathurst 12 hours delivered such a thrill. I am late, I  know, but the pleasure is never delayed!
