Starting from pole at the Bugatti Circuit, Lemans, France, Rossi got the start he had hoped for and sped into the lead.
The race offered early drama when Casey Stoner’s Marlboro Ducati wanted no further participation in the race and left him on the asphalt, in humiliating fashion. His championship hopes are being ditched in the gravel trap and he knows it!
The dynamic duo, Rossi and Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha), fought tooth and nail for top honours. Rossi tried to steal the show, but Lorenzo’s relentless pressure paid off when he passed Rossi, with 17 laps remaining.
Hampered by a shoulder injury, Rossi had no answer for the ‘Flying Spaniard’, Lorenzo, who streaked away, gapping Rossi by as much as 5 seconds – unheard of by Rossi’s standards.
With Rossi drowning and clutching at Lorenzo’s rear wheel, the producer turned his cameras to the battle for 3rd – 5th where a nuclear explosion was in full swing.
Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda), Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) and Nicky Hayden (Marlboro Ducati) were locked in an epic battle. Pedrosa, who was in 3rd, defended stoutly, but his strategy was blown to bits on the last lap. Despite a valiant effort, two mistakes allowed Dovizioso and Hayden to blow by, relegating him to 5th .
Lorenzo rode to victory in front of 82,000 appreciative fans, winning his second consecutive race and with the win he extends his lead in the championship by nine points. His pattern of unique victory celebrations continued, when he grabbed a chair and popcorn and enjoyed the show he just starred. Jorge!Jorge!Jorge!.
Rossi will be on home soil for the next round, Mugello ,Italy,(June 6th ). Rossi in Italy is a tough cookie!
