Like vultures at the sight of dinner, drag racers will descend on Jamwest Speedway this Sunday (27th ). With a billionaire’s fortune invested in aftermarket goodies, racers will push the envelope, a quarter mile at a time, as they chase an elusive elapsed time (et).
The combatants for the most part are usually the same and they must be commended for their continued dedication to an unforgiving and expensive undertaking. But ever so often, lesser known machines are unveiled, which having benefitted from the tuning prowess of a master, wreaks havoc its class. Errol (SIMTECH) did just that last race meet, with his innocuous appearing B13, which ripped through the 10 seconds class like a shredder embracing a discarded document.
Kevin ‘Fu$ion’ Jackson, scored a major achievement last time around. The multiple 14 seconds class winner, dived turbo first, into the 13 seconds dogfight. His Integra, armed with protruding slicks, became one with the asphalt and when VTEC and boost collided his competitors were blown to smithereens!
Super Clean EF
I say all that, to say this, lookout for new entrants like Marlon Simpson, in the various classes. Marlon, who hails from the Honda infested hills of Mandeville, will pilot a ‘super clean’ EF which rocks a single cam motor, but, its combustion chamber sports Arabian horses of the turbocharged variety! If the EF’s horsepower and torque figures are anything to go by, he should at least have a respectable showing.
While I was a Dover for Round 1 of the CMRC, I became a moderator in a Gregg ‘Haggie’ Plummer instigated debate, involving 11 seconds class heavyweights, Noel ‘Spi’ Rhone and Audie ‘Lizard’ Cowan. ‘Lizard’ kept his cards close to his chest and spent more time laughing as ‘Spi’ declared that his brain is connected to the wire which illuminates the green light on the ‘tree’. His reaction times would force you to believe him!
On Saturday, Test and Tune will allow racers to dial in their machines, but on race day, Sunday, words mean nothing and only action on the 1320 ft. will matter. Who will impress? Who will leave in distress?
Sing along – Rain, rain, go away, come back after race day!
Nb. Based on reports, the race meet has been postponed until next week, the 3rd and the 4th of July. I will keep you posted.
