Formula 1: Vettel back in the hunt

Author : cmunroe

I am still in hibernation. The powers that be have not seen it fit to restore my life support – my cable. As such, I am a nomad, gathering info from sports bars (tv) and the live feed on the internet. I am as sad as a widower but, the band plays on.

At the end of the previous blog 3 pertinent questions were raised. All three were answered at Round 16, held at Suzuka. The points at the end of Round 15, indicated that the driver championship was still up for grabs. The top five drivers were all showing signs that they were willing to commit 2 arms and any number of legs to claim number 1.

Vettel

Suzuka smiles on aerodynamic prowess and Adrian Newey is the Sidney Sheldon of the aerodynamic world! A trip through the Esses at Suzuka confirmed that the RB6 is a front straight ahead of the breathless, chasing pack. Its superbly honed, inherent abilities, shone like a searchlight and when applied appropriately – Vettel was invincible.

Pole is always a good starting spot and first from the line was also first to cross the finish line. The five championship contenders survived the carnage which was being generously served but, lady luck ignored Hamilton. As if starting 5 spots back wasn’t enough, he had additional problems during the race, which caused a little rain on his parade. Button benefitted and finished 4th but, a McLaren lock out from the podium at Suzuka wasn’t what Team Principal, Martin Whitmarsh had in mind.

Alonso is delivering on what he said would be required if he is to take the championship. Not having the RB6’s package, the F10 was destined for what was left and in Alonso’s case 3rd was the best he could hope for.

My questions from the previous blog and their answers.

Q. Will Webber extend his lead?
Ans. Yes. Webber now leads with 220 pts.

Q. Will Alonso overtake him on track and in the points standing?
Ans. No. Webber was 2nd and Alonso 3rd. Alonso is tied with Vettel for 3rd in the championship (both on 206pts).

Q. Will Vettel return to his winning ways?
Ans. Yes. Vettel’s win at Suzuka has made him a genuine contender once more.

Is the 2010 season now officially over for Hamilton (192pts) and Button (189pts)? The Korean GP is 2 weeks away!
