Is She Or Isn’t She Beautiful?

Hi there fashionista’s

As I prepare  for another fashion filled weekend in the Caribbean… I find that I am continuously being asked my opinion on the whether the new Miss Jamaica World, Chantal Raymond is beautiful or not?

Does she have ” the looks” to win the Miss World competition? She’s intelligent but is she beautiful? Did the judges make the right choice for a beauty pageant? Are the panel that selected her to be our Miss Jamaica World really  credible,  or qualified enough to make that decision?  Should her critics be silent (just like Yendi’s) and support the Jamaican choice? And naturally the questions just keep coming, as do the  discussions surrounding this issue.

Chantal Raymond is pictured by Winston Sill/Freelance Photographer.

Whats your opinion fashionistas?

As you would expect I have strong opinions regarding this topic so please get the ball rolling, I’m eager to participate :-)

To find out more about Miss Jamaica World you can just click here...

Before I go I wanted to say  thanks lots for all your comments and suggestions on my Miss Jamaica Universe posting :) .

I’ll be honest I did not watch the peagant, but
judging from pictures I’ve seen the lady is beautiful, does she represent Jamaica? sure’ & we should be proud she got us in the world news positively

I have always heard we come in 10 shades LOL lets not hate just congratulate, I wish her allllll the best, hopefully crab inna bucket ppl will quit’ Its amazing how many post was done all over the net about her being beautiful or not when there are so many more thoughts, suggestions & hopes for Jamaica could be voiced showing how marginal a lot of the haters are.

I hope she have continued sucess

  2. Kay says:

    Yes, she is.

  3. Ken says:

She is no beauty, she’s just your average attractive girl, nothing spectacular. I guess we can prepare for next year. Suggestion? Maybe we can ask either Pulse or Saint to lend us one of their international models to represent Jamaica after all, they consistently seem to understand what the international market desires.

  4. Collie says:

Yes she is beautiful & not only beautiful but intelligent and confident too. I think she is an excellent representation for jamaica.

  5. michelle says:

It seems that Jamaicans on a whole belives that it is only physical beauty that is needed to be a beauty queen. However, if a beautiful woman does not have the intelligence and the confidence, to presents herself then it does not matter how beautiful she might be physically, being a pretty dunce is no longer ok in this global world.

  6. Lady Di says:

We should be happy we have someone representing Jamaica instead of asking about her beauty. If we as a nation do that to her instead of supporting her what will all the judges or contestants from the other countries think??Beauty comes from within and shines out, and our present Miss Jamaica is shining. She radiates beauty and intelligence and I personally will suport her. Miss Jamaica go with God & your beauty. Dont let anyone tell you, you are not!! God bless.

  7. Jakan says:

I think the question should be,can we make her competitive for the Miss world competition? I have seen some ppl I considere so ugly yet they put themselvs together and left me asking a ugly she ugly or cute she cute. Chantal has the foundation for us to work with- brains and at least basic looks. Get a coach for everything-teach her how to smile (for what, when and how); give her a breathtaking SOPHISTICATED wardrobe; Inform her FULLY about what the competition is about and how to score ( and get noticed/seen) I suggest she gets close to lisa Hanna and Cindy Breakspeare.
So my anser is the girl has what to work with and we should all help her and SUPPORT her. And Yes, she look like wi (whatever dat mean) SUPPORT DI GIRL! Chantal this one is beauty with a purpose so get the purpose part going and work on the presentation with the beauty part. Mi tink she can win! She is Jamaican

  8. craig says:

I dont think she is beautiful, infact none of the finalist were beautiful. Jamaican need to stop saying our representative are beautiful when they are not because we all know what the Judges are looking for in the Miss World/Miss Universe competition. We dont want to send our Representatives in these competition and the only time they are featured is when they are introducing all the contestant. Yendi Phillip was a true Beauty and reprenesent Jamaica well, now we will just have our new Rep.making her appearance, not good. Finally the new former Miss Jamaican who took over competition needs to step up their game and recruit real beauty to represent us, they know what the International competition is about and should seek to represent us with their knowledge. No simple woman will ever walk away with the International title, locally yes but international no.

  9. jo bent says:

Out of mny one people is our motto, what are
the critera to represent JA. please tell me, by me being short I may not reprsent enlighten me,

Explain this beauty some seek from our females?

  10. annette says:

I cannot beleive that Jamaica could not find a better looking girl to represent us..Jeusus! she was picked becasue the judges were intimdated at her ivy league education…This girl has no face!!!!

  11. Guest says:

Quit the hypocrisy!! Is she beautiful…. Absolutely not! Attractive..yes. Please keep in mind this is a BEAUTY CONTEST people…. She will be competing with international beauties across the world, so we must be cognizant of that fact. I am not blaming her at all… I am blaming the “blind judges” for their decision. As a matter of fact, they all should be banned from ever being pageant judges in the future! Good luck to her… she will need it.

  12. Orella says:

Is she not light skinned enough??? Why all the questions??? The girl is beautiful!

  13. vedalyn Simpson says:

Ken, I do not know just what is your definition of beauty, but I think she is a beautiful yong lady, not only is she beauiful but very inteligent and confident. In all she is beautiful inside out.

  14. char says:

Jamaicans have never minced words when we see things we don’t like, we call a spade a spade. All who say that Chantal Raymond is beautiful, if your not related to her, check your eyesight and stop play hypocrite.
SHE IS AVERAGE at best, speak the truth.
The pageant is called a BEAUTY PAGEANT not the HIGHEST DEGREE PAGEANT, so the contestant should be BEAUTIFUL (not average)as well as intelligent. Take a look at past winners, they were intelligent and they did not barely “PASS” in the beauty department. She win already, so all we can do is hope that “personality, warmth and intelligence” is the criteria for this year’s Miss World pageant.

  15. anon says:

This lady has good looks. She is not CRIS, but she certainly is NOT ugly! The comment left about what is accepted and desired abroad is rubbish. Yes the so called model look and watered down colour and features are desired in the FASHION industry worldwide, but one or few industries are not representative of the masses! Many Black people here in the UK and in the US, actually welcome and love seeing real black women representing us in the public eye, instead of worshipping and aspiring to the watered down White Girl dipped in Chocolate look! I am sooo sick me hearing and reading this nonsense from people in developing countries in the Caribbean, Asia, Africa, Latin America etc (and a small %age of people here) acting like Light skin and Puss eye is the epitome of beauty! This question didn’t have to even be asked let alone answered. The truth is people should fix up, love their race, show some pride and remember that WE ARE NO LONGER ON THE SLAVE PLANTATION AND NEED TO DROP THE SLAVE MENTALITY ME THINKING! White and Light is NOT Any HIGHER than Black!

  16. anon says:

Btw plenty of you just dont like dark skin. However next time you watch Miss World or Universe be honest and ask yourself… If you dont see many many Countries put a real ugly White or Light girl to rep them? Problem is many people dont look at structure and features, instead they carry round a complex of being black, which results in them think anything light or White, is beautiful and right. Individual tartar is one thing deep hate for the varying dark complexions we come in is just worrying and wrong.

  17. MP Ricardo says:

I did not see the Miss Jamaica World pageant but from what I can see Chantal looks fine. What are we really looking for here? Does she need to be drop dead gorgeous to be accepted? In the Miss Universe pageant I felt Miss Guatemala was the hottest one there and she did not make top 5. Congratulations to Yendi by the way. Chantal has a nice clean smile and seems to have the stuff. Winning the pageant is another story. I feel it’s amazing that us jamaicans are even discussing if someone is beautiful or not. Ah dat we gone to? Chantal..gwaan ah China an do yuh ting in October.

  18. Stephanie says:

Shes by no means ugly, but certainly not pretty either. Not sure why she even bothered to enter/reenter, having attained a Harvard Law Degree, why not move on to bigger things? She also has a straight body, no curves, & her strong features make her look masculine. Can she win or place highly in Miss WORLD? Hell no. Her only hope now is to try to win Sport mini contest which would secure a spot in top 15, but she has no other options/chances. And it has nothing to do with race, Jamaica have crowned beautiful black women before, Terri-Karelle & Sara Lawrence are recent examples. We missed the mark this year by far…

  19. Blaqueinque says:

[sarcasm]Oh yeah. If anything this article will certainly be a great boost to her ego. [/sarcasm]

  20. TINA says:

Someone remarked that she is beautiful on the inside, well she has got to turn her self inside out for the Miss World pagaent, because she is no beauty queen. The girl’s smile has a ugly crease and her fake eyes are hard to to look at. We will be the laughing stock this year at Miss World believe me. Yendi was a a beauty compared to this girl and you should hear how the Bahamians and Trinis cursed her looks on their respective beauty forums. This girl is not even attractive, masculine shape and a masculine aura. LORD HELP US!!! AND PEOPLE SHE DOES’NT HAVE TO BE LIGHT SKINNED BUT FIND SOMEONE FACIALLY BEAUTIFUL JAMAICANS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. MONICA says:

Leave the woman alone ,everyone they choose for miss world or miss universe, Jamaican find fault with them ,She look good and she can represent us .its not only about the beauty can she represent our country.
A lot of ladies enters beauty contest who are so beautiful, and they are ask a question, and its a no ,no cant speak.I wish her luck in the Miss world contest. It takes a lot of courage to do what those ladies does.
Miss world and miss universe contest is not as easy to win as we look at it. GOOD LUCK GIRL YOU CAN DO IT.

  22. Peter says:

Problem with us Jamaicans, too often we compromise standards. Were forgetting this is a contest, a beauty contest, where beauty of face, body matters, alongside with personality & charm & awareness (not so much intelligence). Lisa Hanna won Miss World at age 18, barely out of High School. Now we have panel of judges who got frightened by Ms Raymonds Harvard Law Degree, so they ignored everything else & she won. Any of the runners up would’ve been more deserving, as they all had better package of the right attributes. This Miss Jamaica is average, and in the history of the pageant shes probably the least attractive when you consider her features and fact that she has no body. I wish her good luck in Miss World, she’ll need a lot of luck if you ask me…

  23. trixy says:

Jamaicans have an unhealthy obsession with European concept of beauty which has seen many resorting to the dangerous practice of skin lightening. Get over uself alla yu race hating jamaican house n***as. Gwaan Chantal yu have as much right to represent your nation as any crossbred mongrel peddling this big lie bout ‘out of many one people’.

  24. Guest says:

Chantal, this is not personal, it’s just the “business of Miss World” and the truth. Now it’s going to take divine intervention for her to even make it to the final 15…and that is a stretch. Please refrain from using “the race card” people and embrace the truth. The term beautiful is a strong term to use to describe her, she is just “alright”…ok? Alright is just not good enough to make it in the Miss World arena, so let’s face it, she can’t make it. Look how many super attractive dark skinned past representatives we’ve had…. Something went terribly wrong this year, and it will go down in the history books for sure. Next year …please do not serve alcohol to the judges before the crowning

  25. Ash Lee says:

Honestly, I don’t believe anyone is debating skin color as the issue here. I personally don’t regard beauty in terms of shade… If we are speaking specifically of just physical beauty, i believe (and have seen/read scientific programming/books)that it’s in the facial proprtions when we look at someone that makes us say “ok, this person in physically beautiful, attractive” or whatever other adjectives we choose to use.

I kinda like this idea bc it makes sense… I’ve seen different races of women together and I don’t automatically think the white one or the long haired one is the most beautiful.

When i was much younger my boyfriend’s sister is a dark skinned Jamaican girl and she has won so many beauty contest throughout her teenage and early 20s in JA and the US… she is just a strikingly beautiful girl.

I’m no scientist but the idea of proportions and how it translates from our eye’s view (the symmetry) to our brain makes sense. BTW.. the proportions being referred to was mainly facial – your nose, eyes, mouth proportion to the shape of your face and also symmetry is important… the more symmetrical the face, the more in translates to the brain as beautiful. I guess if we look at it this way we can understand why we think many Ethiopians (just as an example) are beautiful looking people, etc. Think of how many people we consider beautiful…

I don’t think the white skin thing is really it anymore, that is mostly a social conditioning from colonial times and even so is on its way out (in my opinion). As a matter of fact being darker is considered very desirable and beautiful now. I am myself a “browning” and i see so many white people and fairer complexioned races trying to “bronze out”…*LOL* Many of them tan & spray and are darker than me, which i find very humorous. :) Not to mention they are willing to risk early aging and skin cancer… Insane!

  26. Ash Lee says:

Correction… I meant to say that i don’t believe that anyone should be debating skin color as the issue here re: MIss Jamaica World being considered beautiful or not.

  27. Ash Lee says:

@ Tina… you should know by now that the Trini dem have REAL issues with Jamaica/Jamaicans in general… so no need to pay them any attention. As a matter a fact, this proves a point… look at how many mix up coolie girls are in Trinidad and rep them at these competitions yet they have had less wins in these beauty contests than Jamaica.

BTW… Jamaica should be very proud we are in the top 5, in the world (i believe) in winning Miss World… AND we need to stop debating about the skin color and hair length we send to rep and do some history lessons on Jamaica and the different races that make us so uniquely beautiful. We’re a mixed breed and that is what’s beautiful.

  28. Ash Lee says:

As of 2009, Jamaica ranks#3 in the world with Miss Wolrd wins. We are tied with Sweden & Iceland who also have 3 wins.

  29. MP Ricardo says:

I will make an ignorant but somewhat half true statement, a lot of jamaican females do not know how to act when they are amongst white, chinese, foreign people. Possibly Chantal was the best to represent us in that competition..but with that said these are ‘beauty’ contest so I understand where you all are coming from. If you did indeed watch the Miss Jamaica World competition(which I did not) the other girls were probably hott but may not have been the best to represent us. And we all know jamaicans love get frighten..when mi come down deh pon vacation di amount ah ppl weh frighten over mi it’s not even funny. And I am not anything too special either..hahaha. Big up unoo self, and yes Yendi is hott and she full of attitude and boasy walk…

  30. greg manley says:

as the saying goes ‘beauty in the eyes of the beholder’….well behold ,a beauty, yes she is but in the traditional sense, maybe thats not who somefolks was looking for,i remember jamaica had a doctor/beauty queen one year, and people were so proud they couldnt contain themselves..so this one is brains also..dont forget the girl from trinidad who won the miss universe few years back..the trinis were complaining that she was too dark to win and if she is all trinidad could send, yet she won…well jamaicans usually know beauty, the opinions have to be taken seriously, but like i said lets see..

  31. peter moussey says:

DOES IT REALLY MATTER WHAT U ALL THINK THE GIR ENTERED TO WIN THE COMPETITION AND DID SO ASA JAMAICA,WE SHOULD ALL WISH HER WELL AND STOP BEEN NEGATIVE WE ARE A PROUD PEOPLE.WE HAVE ALWAYS DONE WELL AT THIS SO WISH HER WELL HOPE THAT THE JUDGES AT MISS WORL SEE WHAR\T TJ\HE LOCAL JUDGES SAW IN HER TOO.

  32. jo bent says:

Gosh’ I would like to see some of the UGLY ppl
here who says this woman is not beautiful, Is she not light enough, or has green or blue eyes for some of us to says she’ a beauty?

She is JAMAICAN and rpresented us, no other country dis and Dog their representatives like us, my god this self-hate that have been embedded in our society continues to keep us
    from self-pride: China send Chinese, Spain send Spanish, we ought to send someone who is representative of us not just a beauty-Dunce;
no wonder some of our stupid women are even rubbing their children with bleaching creme and some of our men no matter how ugly they are they think a woman got to be high high yellow to be beautiful, a throw-back from the colonial days passed down…please give me a break…

Here she comes Miss Jamica & Beautiful””’

Hey’ more important things in the country to debate about

  33. Fragrancelily says:

Not a raving beauty but lovely smile and teeth. She probably has excellent qualities we cannot see. She’s attractive alas, beauty of the face is only rarely given to a few – but we congratulate her anyway.

  34. rarray says:

This girl is not ugly, but she is not pretty enough to win the miss world or even to be placed in the top ten. I believe she knew a judge or two.
She also looks older than her true age.

  35. shelly says:

yes beautiful but not a beauty queen.

  36. wood law says:

damn square she is a true beauty gorgeous even and i should know being an admirer of beauty for 57 years.

  37. wood law says:

I wish my Jamaican all the best as she goes to represent even her detractors just like Yendi did.We in the diaspora eagerly await the chance to cheer for her and are sure she will be a good ambassador.

  38. RuddyC says:

Well FINALLy we are having SOME-ONE with the TOTAL JAMAICAN INGREDENCE. I mean of AFRICAN HERITAGE.
We have been let to BELIEVE for YEARS that only LIGHT_SKINED people of ASIAN and EURPOEAN decent or QUALIFED and JUST to REPRESENT and ACCEPTED in our SOCIETY.

Now FINALLY the EVIDENT has HAPPENED. But for those whom are still CONFUSED, and INFERIOR with ther own DARK_SKIN may UNWILLIINGLY to ACCEPT this TRANSFORMATION.

Go GIRL! BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN too TIRED of this LIGHT-SKIN IDEALOGY been SHOVED DOWN our THOARTS for years.
Unfortunately this has been sending the WRONG MESSAGES to our DARKER-SKINNED women of AFRICAN HERITAGE which has INVOKED the EPIDEMIC of SKIN BLEACHING

  39. Andel says:

All those who are saying that she is not beautiful I hope that you are all raising your “beautiful’ children to enter subsequent Ms Jamaica World contests.

I also hope that the international judges are not influenced by the lack of confidence that a number of Jamaicans are displaying towards Chantal. I think they are really smarter.

How would you all feel if she wins?

  40. TINA says:

@Ash Lee yes we have three miss worlds and that is all we will have if we keep sending mediocre looking girls. If it was a Mensa contest judging on IQ fine send her. but if you are judging beauty of face amongst other creeds and races you must be at the top of your game. your face must look striking lets say Latoya Woods from Trinidad, that is a striking beauty black and proud, this girl does not cut the mustard. and don’t mention shape!! she is straight and manly in appearance. I cannot believe that these foolish posters have the nerve to think that that face will be plastered all over ad campaigns for Miss World!! NAIVETE, AND ONCE AGAIN COLOR IS NOT IMPORTANT, CHOOSE A SHAPELY GIRL DONETTE PLOWRIGHT WOULD DO BECAUSE SHE IS PRETTY!!

  41. HYCR says:

I think she is beautiful. She sure stood out in the crowd. She deserve it. Congrats girl!

  42. bob says:

First of all, this is called a beauty contest, our girl, would win hands down if it was an intelligence contest. Now she is no way close to ugly, no question about that, quite attractive i would say, but this is a beauty contest i say again, not a attractive intelligence contest, right. but anyway, good luck and god speed

  43. Lisa says:

First let me say her complexion is RADIANT!!! (though darker than the usual)also, she is very intelligent and CONFIDENT and seems to also have adequate international exposed that makes up for her facial looks…with that mix the possibility exist that she might be able to impress the judges at MW, as there are times when they just decide and say lets go DARK this time around….i think i’ve seen it happen once or twice even for Wendy Fitz-Williams @Ms. universe

  44. She has the whole package, beauty and brains. We made it that far and she represent wee.

  45. claudettew@cwjamaica.com says:

The lady is attractive but I don’t think that she will get far. She’s not shapely or dynamic. However, my biggest beef this year is that she truly does not represent US. She’s more American than anything else. Listen to her accent. Does she know about Jamaican culture, outside of Bob Marley?

  46. Dee1970 says:

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder! She is a beautiful, educated accomplished young lady. More power to her. Back in my day we had names for persons who had the looks but no brains – pretty dunce. When all is said and done she could never be described. Stop hating and just appreciate her and acknowledge her.

  47. michelle says:

Let us not fool ourselves. Get real. Chantal is no beauty;she has a tough-looking face; when she smiles, her face has an ugly crease and her fake eyes (what are those contact lens?, I have no clue) are hard to look at. Those judges were obviously frightened by her Harvard Law Degree, and made a dumb decision. If she comes in the top 15 in the Miss Universe contest, pigs will fly. We shall see.

  48. Barbara says:

Frankie said she is not “miss world material” How come – does she have to be high class brown skin Jamaican human being to be “miss world material”? Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder(s) and I hope the Miss World competition prove you (and others) wrong. Instead of putting her down, try to help by making her feel comfortable and very confident to take on the task of making all of us very proud of “little Jamaica” producing such beauties. Walk good.

  49. trixy says:

    @craig
“the new former Miss Jamaican who took over competition needs to step up their game and recruit real beauty to represent us”

please!!! tell me who are you talking about when you say “US”. May I remind you the Jamaican population is 90% black. Those who think Jamaica is at the top of the world with Sweden in beauty contest wins let me put it to you that at least Sweden sends a Swede (indigenous) to represent them and they wouldnt have it any other way. Jamaica’s Miss Worlds on the other hand have been Indian (Lisa Hanna) and Jewish (Cindy Breakspear and Carol Joan Crawford). Do they represent us? I’ll believe it when I see India send a black girl to represent them.

  50. ERICKA says:

I WAAN CUSS SO BAD, BUT I KNOW I CANT. LET ME SEY THIS. THAT IS WHAT WRONG WITH YOU JAMAICIANS, YOU DONT SUPPORT EACH OTHER. ALL YOU DO TEAR EACH OTHER APART. YOU PEOPLE ARE STILL LIVING IN THE ERA OF “IF YOU NOT LIGHT SKIN YOU ARE NOT BEATIFUL”. (POOR UNNO) YOU ALL SHOULD BE ASHAME OF UNNO SELF. I WOULD LOVE FI SEE WEY SOME A UNNO LOOK LIKE.
