Miss World 2010: Which Beauty Are You Watching?

Hey fashionistas,

No doubt like me you’ve been keeping a close eye on the Miss World 2010 competition, in Sanya, China.  Although the competition culminates on October 30, 2010, a number of  other competitions have already taken place that fast track the winners to the semi finals.  Unfortunately Miss Jamaica World, Chantal Raymond was not selected.

The three fast-track winners, are Miss Puerto Rico, Beach Beauty; Miss Northern Ireland, Sports Beauty, and Miss Norway, Top Model. They will be accompanied by the host nation’s representative Miss China. Below are photographs of the semi-finalists:).

In this photograph courtesy of sanya.news.cn we have the winner of the Top Model contest, Miss Norway (centre).  She is accompanied by competition runners up  Miss USA (left) and Miss Russia.

In this photograph courtesy of chinanews.com you can see the winner of the Miss Sports Beauty competition Miss Northern Ireland (centre).  She is flanked by Miss Slovakia second place contestant (left) and Miss Norway.

In this photography courtesy of globalbeauties.com we see the winner of the  Miss Beach Beauty competition Miss  Peurto Rico (centre).    She is accompanied by Miss USA (left) and Miss Norway, second and third place contestants respectively

Miss Norway seems to be doing well!   Doesn’t she…. Hmmm.  She has placed well in all three of the  fast track competitions…closely followed by Miss USA...who placed in the top three for two of the competitions.  Which in the words of MeatloafTwo out of Three Ain’t Bad…” is it?

Have they taken the lead from Miss Brazil?

Now I know from previous discussions, Miss Jamaica and Miss China are not very popular with you.  However,Miss Brazil is…. Do you think she can make it? Or is their another beauty to watch?  Whose your favourite to win? And Why?

A lot of you have shared with me in other blog posts, emails and via twitter (www.twitter.com/qvdesigns ), I’d love you to get the discussion rolling here…I promise I will jump in with my opinions :) .

*Oh yes, for the uninitiated Meatloaf is a male singer who had a number of successful songs  starting in late the  1970s.  Its a cool song which you can check out on youtube…  or your parents record collection.

@Jenn… you may have misunderstood what i mean by “look good one paper…” I’m certainly not referring to photos! Gosh no!*lol* But rather a term often used to refer to one’s credentials, such as ones CV/resume/degrees,even bank statements/investments etc (in context of course).
In Chantals case it was in reference to her Harvard Law degree, as well as her 9 scholarships… I give credit where due… we are proud of her accomplishments “on paper” BUT, alas! That does not a beauty pageant winner make!
    Cheers! :)

  2. AshLee says:

Sean Knight… Point taken. But that being the case, we should not have sent anyone at all!

The MJW panel of judges was just “frighten” for the Harvard Law degree… Admit it! Still a poor choice… the results speak for themselves – the debate on that is so over!!!

  3. Carmen from Toronto says:

It’s not that Chantal was a poor choice, there was no better choice- go back and review the vital statistics of the other girls – and you will see that they are all either too large or too small(hips and waistline measurements) to have even stand a chance at the MW contest. The MJW panel of judges could not find a standard “beauty” that night, so they picked a “brain” instead. Give Chantal a break Jamacans- she ain’t all that bad. Some of you just gruge her for her degree(:.

  4. jenn says:

carmen from toronto…. you have me in stitches here to suggest that,”…It’s not that Chantal was a poor choice, there was no better choice- go back and review the vital statistics of the other girls…”
my dear, chantals body had nowhere going from what it was 5 years ago and now in 2010. it is far easier and prudent to get a curvy girl like pat hue into shape simply because she already has the goods.! so eliminating degree as a requirement as well as having no charm and personality Chantal should not have placed in MJW top 5.. top 10 at best for effort. listen carmen, i agree it (the contest) is over, but geez man, open your eyes and want something right and fitting now man…don’t you want jamaica to dowell going forward ?

  5. Phil says:

haha..@carmen (from Toronto)!! Boy, no matter what part of the world, beauty is always a “hot” topic ehh?? Chantal will be topic for years to come!! Fact is she was a very poor choice, thats not even a debate. Many feel she actually surpassed Tonoya who eventually won a scholarship. Chantal wasnt even featured in the telecast. And her only hope- talent, they quickly changed rules to eliminate boring poems & monologues to make a point. Whatever u decide, U cant choose brains..over beauty, in a beauty contest. If other girls had small (hips & waist) as u say, Id rather that, than having a brainy miss, with a body shaped like a pencil. Jamaica did not make top 40 beach, were not talking top 20, 40 I said..and most Caribbean girls made top 40, so how can you say she aint that bad?? Dont u have standards? As for ‘gruge’, I believe you meant ‘grudge’, not sure who you refer to..cuz Harvard Degree means very little to those of us gainfully employed. If it meant that much to Chantal she wouldve moved on, & pursued her law career with a job befitting her Harvard Degree, instead of reentering a contest, in which she placed 5th, few yrs ago, when she didnt really deserve more than another 5th place this year, looking exactly the same, with the same shapeless body, and flat personality. Thanks much…

  6. SLIMCINDY says:

@Phill I couldn’t agree more. how they chose a brainiac over beauty in a beauty contest still amazes me.And yes she not even shame good, I MEAN AS Bad as Tonoya was at least she had a whoppa body and yes she won a scholarship at miss world so at least she was featured;and she didn’t have a law degree, doubt if she even had masters. this girl Chantal never made the cut and most Caribbean girls made it to the top 40 beach. the judges of miss America are fashion experts, and most of the girls that entered are models, TV personalities etc….u don’t need brains to b either of the above. And u sure don’t need brains to answer a question at miss world. that is it with our pageants, if we r successful with a candidate in a particular year, the next year we flop…we need to b consistent. Look at the high we came of with Yendi and right after her is Chantal… Spartan need to do better. Mi still seh Kerry Moxam shud a win…hope she enters again…Hopefully next year.

  7. Phil says:

Actually, I dont think Kerry is all that either, so she placed top 15 in a low keyed, low standards contest with only 50 odd girls competing, not really a big deal. She has the body, but not much more. Facially shes not a ‘wow’ either. Did u watch her MJW video??

I have no problems choosing a brainy girl, if she has the beauty & personality. Chantal had neither, she doesnt interest. By the way, theres hot talk going on now, that the issue seems way bigger! Like something ‘shady’ took place at the judges table. On Spartan Facebook, someone wrote that Miss World Org was made aware of the fiasco/scandal surrounding her win. A formal letter was sent to MW (not sure by whom), with pics!

Its all strange, MW appeared to diss Miss Jamaica this year. First they chose a top 40 Beach (they never done that before), they included almost all Caribbean girls except JA, if u look at it, they selected almost 1/2 the MW contestants!! Then they didnt show her in telecast, I dont buy argument about ‘glitch’ either! IT was also quite strange they created a new rule, in middle of talent competition- no poems & monologues (Chantal was immediatly disqualified). It appears they knew something.

Worse, Spartan & MJW, seem to be now featuring Kerry prominently online (pics, articles), instead of MJW- very strange indeed!!..Does anyone know?? :)

  8. idgara says:

    God, these are hot ladies

  9. Carmen from Toronto says:

Phil, I have been wordering why you spend so much time ‘hating on Chantal’… I was thinking that you may just be a disgruntled relative/friend of one of the girls who ‘lost’, but I think I get it now…”Many feel she actually surpassed Tonoya who eventually won a scholarship”. Wasn’t Tonoya also a controversial MJW winner(quite intelligent) and of a darker complexion than those we have been accustomed to sending overseas to represent Jamaica?

  10. Phil says:

..Oh please carmen. Really, if you cant have standards why bother? You think its about race? Beautiful dark/afro/black Jamaican beauties have won contests & were overwhelmingly supported by fans, & later went on to do very well internationally! Terri Karelle Griffiths did very well..so did Sara Lawrence. So whats your point? Intelligence isn’t beauty dear, intelligence barely gets you through the gates in a beauty contest if the beauty (body, face) & personality are lacking!

Miss World 2010 is only 18yrs old dear, a teen, fresh out of High School..she hopes to be a school teacher! Yes..she beat many a 24 yr olds, some with Harvard Law Degrees!!

And Yes, Tonoya was very controversial, not as controversial as Chantal, at least Tonoya had a decent body, but she too was lacking in personality & beauty. Surprisingly they continue to use her for judging, which probably explain WHY Jamaicas standards (& international ranking) have been dropping at a rapid rate!!

  11. jenn says:

oh my… carmen honey, it’s not all that difficult though, don’t you think ? tonoya was horrible as was chantal…as was brittany and i’m keepiong it very , very real ! neither should be an any beauty pageant to begin with and lyons was a disgrace…brains or not ! but seriously since no one can deny a young lady from entering, it’s the selection process that leaves alot to be desired.. and the names above were poor an unexplainable choices. and i must agree that kerry moxam, is not the worst, but she is as dull as they come! no spark, and not bright.. i mean who talks about their hometown as being a place of ‘interbreeding’ as away of explaining why she is suitable , one way or another.. it’s just dumb, Carmen.. plain DUMB !

  12. SLIMCINDY says:

@Phill: den it nuh mus controversial if dem mek a duppy win, lol!!! I couldn’t care less about miss world dissing us we deserved the diss. She (Kerry Moxam)may in my opinion was one of the better candidates to have been selected..and yea her body is offf the chain. Still hopes she enters again…hopefully next year

  13. Phil says:

@slim cindy…if you hope Kerry Moxam enters/reenters again, youre also really off key. She too, needs to move on now, in my opinion, typical Jamaican “red” St Elizabeth type, her only asset is a killer body & some wonder if she had some work done in the chest area, if you know what I mean. Her personality is flat, & interviewing skills are weak, and facially, very ordinary look. I wouldve placed her 3rd or 4th, with Chantal, right behind, 4th or 5th. I hope Kerry, like Chantal decide to move on, become gainfully employed with a real job in the fields they spent years studying at University. Am I too harsh?? Not at all, just like to keep it real… If Jamaica wants to regain its status in world of beauty, they have to look for younger more interesting beauties, not the older more accomplished women, who are desperately trying to find themselves (after graduating from many years behind the scenes in University). Yawn.

  14. Phil says:

@ Slim Cindy, to endorse my point earlier re Kerry Moxam, Jenn says it best in her recent post about Kerry who bragged in interviews & a bio, about her interbreeding, as an asset she hoped would help her in the InterCon Contest. Only animals interbreed Kerry, poor choice of words, and poor choice of subject to consider a personal asset!!..Ive never once heard a Cindy Breakspeare or Lisa Hanna talking/bragging about their “interbreeding”…You get me??

  15. SLIMCINDY says:

@phill: no not harsh, at all anybody’s opinion on this is welcomed by me…well I like her, and yea she shouldn’t have mentioned the interbreeding “asset”,lol! many Jamaicans are mixed including myself(but at least that’s what i was told). but big deal who cares about that…well i hope spartan gets to c our comments and move foward in a positve light, as it costs to send these girls off to these competitions;the least they can do is send a stunner and the stunner inturn REPRESENTS!!! A question for you Phill: do you think they should have both mjw and mju contestants be chosen from one pageant night within the first 2-3months of the year? i mean I think it would be better instead of having two beauty pageants so close to the international leg of finals…and i mean they would have enough time to prepare..

  16. SLIMCINDY says:

again at Phill: someone responded on another page about Chantal’s performance, saying that maybe if she had a chance to do her “talent piece” she would have been better place and she nevr got enough time to fully prepared…what a load a nonesense!!! sarah lawerence one a week before flying out and at the finals she made top six, plus she was placed in the beach beauty her interview was very good; she’s a charmer and SHE WAS AND IS STILL A STUNNER

  17. phil says:

Sowwy..Talent has absolutely nuttin to do with beauty. And whoever said that, need a reality check, even if they allowed her silly piece in Talent, chances are she wouldnt have made top 20 talent. Anyone will tell her it was “lovely”, to get her out of their face, doesnt mean it was a hit, shes so annoying its not funny. And no, who cares if MJW or MJW is held several mths or 1 mth before the intl contest..or whether its combined or not. Dont forget its also a bizness..a franchise, with hefty franchise fees. One enterprise might not want both. They are 2 different contests, which appeal to 2 different types of beauty, MJW is more subdued beauties, sweet, charitable, diplomatic..and MJU is more aggressive, assertive, more sexy..as Yendi says, more modelesque. Keep em separate, figure out the types that tend to do well in each, focus on that & by jolly raise the bar.

Spartan is in it for Marketing, its an investment, if their beauty does well internationally, its added promo for the Health Club….which is their mainstay bizness …

  18. phil says:

Shaz hunny..ur soo quiet..hope ur not bored with all this beauty chat on ur blog ..LoLL…beauty is in, its big bizness hun, its why this topic is one of the more popular. Lets hope Spartan is reading it…daily. Damnit…

  19. Paul says:

If I can get in belatedly on this discussion – I would like to know more about this plot by MW to diss Miss Jamaica, as it’s the first I’m hearing about it. I was very disappointed when they didn’t show her, and I don’t buy the “glitch” excuse either – this doesn’t happen at this calibre event.

  20. Shaz says:

@Phil Hey sorry been travelling …. am loving the debate…. check out my latest post.

  21. jenn says:

WELL PAUL.., personally..all juila would have done was to totally ignore her (Chantal’s) participation as just another non contender…or better yet…a girl going nowhere! I don’t see that any energy had to be wasted on Chantal who was way below par to begin with ……if Chantal was better looking and in better physical shape…, with a better personality ( as she seemed clearly annoying to me with that jarring and grating voice)…she would have been received differently.Chantal is WRONG ! i mean .. she’s not even beauty pageant material in my opinion….just looking at her and you see major MISTAKE and DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!…wuith that said.., isn’t it time to takea real hard lok a tthe judging process, I say .., DUMP, whos there now, and REVAMP..with relevant, fresh and smarter heads…the environment needs a cultural awakening !

  22. jenn says:

and i agree with Phil ! chantal’s talent was marginal at best with no added value to her advancing in a beauty pageant. while pageant is a mini comp allowing a girl to advance to semi’s…, MWO history shows that girls who advance by winning mini, can still boast and call themselves beauties. julia morley still instructs her judges that Ms World is a beauty contest.. that is why she remains ‘FLEXIBLE’ during the entire month long contest as she scope out the almost 110 girls who enter…no surprise that ‘monologues’ and ‘poems’ were abandoned…because none of the girls performing in those categories were…beauties !

  23. Phil says:

@Paul..its real. I now have info that Chantal was not well liked in China, even amongst Caribbean girls, which explain why she was rarely seen with them in pics. I wont say how I got this info, but its reliable. She came across annoying, & strange, NUFF & just too much..& her strange voice, make u wanna rush to the nearest exit!

Anyway, it was reported that someone sent a formal letter to Miss World Org, pics & all, explaining/complaining about what happened when CHantal was elected. They incl runners up pics (so Im told. MW was put on guard & some girls in China also heard of the Jamaican controversy. They saw stuff online..blogs, etc..google her name & u see it all (LOL)

Ok…the glitch durin telecast, cmon, MW is a first rated contest, the production incl technicalities is rehearsed to perfection. Show might be boring & long,yaa.. but technical glitch?? Oh please. Nearly every Caribbean girl made top 40 beach beauty & JA was left out. Top 40 was then treated to a special day at Spa resort, to rub it in.

Also surprising was talent- after Chantal worked so hard for talent & presented her monologue for talent prelims, Judges created a new rule suddenly, no poems/monologues (this never happened before in history of MW talent).I rest my case….

  24. AshLee says:

@ Carmen from Toronto… I know “some people” frighten for degree but a degree does not a person make… As a matter a fact, degree, money, material things are what you have not who you are! Your statement is waaay off key.

Our point is that the MW competition did not require a Harvard degree (OBVIOUSLY! Look at who actually won). Chantal was is no way a good choice in representing Jamaica in this competition… *period*

As i said before, if there was no one up to par, then we should not have entered MW this year… That’s all!

  25. AshLee says:

AND What’s the hang up with this “dark girl” thing?
History! History! History! dark, brown, light, white, coolie, chiney, etc… we’ve all been here for hundreds of years now… Know your history and you’ll see no need to make such a statement or reference.

  26. Phil says:

can someone E-forward this blog to Spartan? LOL..So many comments, wow..these comments should not be made in vain, they should all be shared wit Spartan director(s)…

  27. Carmen from Toronto says:

@Ashley, Give it a rest… the competion is over. There can only be one winner of the MW contest, Chantal was declared the winner of MJW, she went to China and represented her country-as was expected of her.

As per phil she did not have “the goods” and thus did not ‘do very well’. It does not matter to you and others that she is only one of among several of the “almost 110 girls…” who entered that did not make to 40 or 20… because it is written in the rule of law somewhere that MJW has to place or “do well” every year? Just leave the girl alone.

By the way, for your information, I know my history, I have lived it, witnessed it, studied it, written about it, and read about it. This is why I see the need to make such a statement or reference, and I can safely that…a large number of Jamaicans are still not able to see beyond the ‘Colonial’ definition of beauty that has been inclucated in their minds. Talk about standards- think about it, whose standard or definition of beauty are you operating on?

@ Phil, you have info that Chantal was not well liked in China, even amongst Caribbean girls, and you wont say how I got this info, but its reliable… My God,you had a spy in China spying on poor Chantal? Boy you really have an axe to grind with this one…LOL!!

Sweet dreams Chantal, hope your MJW nightmares end soon. You may not have ‘interbreeding’ asset like Kerry..lol, but you already have the “Real Goods”, the one that really matters in the end- your education … Havard Degree at that(;))- no one can take that away form you…now uses it to make a real difference to your community. There is so much to be done Chantal dear…

This all for now folks, talk to you all next MJW.

  28. SLIMCINDY says:

@ Phill: point taken again, but there is a discussion board on Spartan Healt Club’s discussion board. I saw a recent picture with Chantal and I think she cut her hair…weirdo weirdness jus never seems to stop. overall and againn this is jus the WORST performance to date…and I doe blame the MW organizers to ditch her…her body and face plus personality nver mek it. reaaly ppl u doe need a law degree to answer those questiones at MW;Miss World is a freakin high school graduate for crying out loud!!!

  29. SLIMCINDY says:

@ phill the discussion board is via Facebook.

  30. SLIMCINDY says:

2 carmen: poor u fact still remains it’s a beauty pageant, the first thing they’re suppose to see is ur BEAUTY, LOL!!! afterwards ur personality ect, again miss world is a high school graduate…hence they’r not looking accomplished girls es[ecially when they lk like chantal

  31. Phil says:

Carmen..youre wearing me out. LoL. I wont give any info how I got this info, but trust me, there were many girls from Caribbean competing in China with Chantal, word gets around, OK?? Chantal brought down Jamaicas international beauty ranking, she shouldnt have placed more than 5th again this year, she looked same as she did few years ago when she place 5th.

BTW, guys & gals, whats your take on Salome Campbell? Shes Jamaicas rep in Miss Globe Intl in Turkey in Dec. Over 100 girls competing. I wish her goodluck. I hope she will work on her energy, I think thats her main weakness, how she projects in photos..and on stage. She has a nice body, flawless skin, pleasant face. Gluck.

  32. Phil says:

@ SlimCindy..I dont think CHantal cut her hair at all..She prolly just pulled out all the fake extensions, LoL, plus she realised by now its all pointless..shes now job hunting, cant have all this fake tinted hair all over the place in Law Firm, she wont be taken seriously..Wonder when will she bring back the fake coloured contacts, she tricked lotta people with her eyes also..*sigh*.

  33. jenn says:

and i’d like to add that she, Chantal should return all that jewellery she got at MJW as she got the crown due to judges fraud.., lol, imagine that , fake hair, fake eyes and @carmen you expected the real deal at MW? I say she should do the right thing and return the real stuff and keep all her fake stuff….cause those suit her fine !

  34. SLIMCINDY says:

@phill: DWL!!! it’s a crying shame man. i have a friend who is very diplomatic in her reasonings and trus me dis topic came up the other day and she wasn’t diplomatic at all in talking abt chantal. infact she was very outspoken about d whole ting.and i like salome she really has a nice body hope she does…but she wasn’t evn placed on MJW nite. i mean there were so many girls there that had it, but we r a country dat loves PHD’S even wen it doesn’t matter

  35. AshLee says:

@Carmen from Toronto… Wrong target hon *lol*

You are sooo waaay off and so late. Also just as Chantal, you appear to be a “Johnny come lately”… take note of the people you’re speaking to here… Obviously people who are well connected in Jamaican society and therefore know of what we speak (thank you Phil!)AND no one here feels the need to tout their credentials (Johnny come lately “Carmen from Toronto” – who has to state even that *woooieee*)… We’re simply giving our opinions on a public site… you need to “give it a rest” dear.

AND BTW if you really knew your history outside of “acadamia” you wouldn’t be spewing have the gibberish you have thus far…
You sound like a 5 year old defending her friend in the playground.

  36. AshLee says:

    AND Moving right along! *lol*

@ Phil… I must admit, i didn’t take much note of her in the MJW competition. I agree, she has an attractive and very pleasant face… Let’s see about the rest.

  37. AshLee says:

@ SlimCindy… You’re right. Time and place for everything. It was the time and place for us to choose BEAUTY (well rounded, of course)for a BEAUTY competition but we didn’t deliver… Hence, JA didn’t even place!

  38. Phil says:

@Ash, you prolly didnt notice her Salome) becuz Spartan was too busy pushing one girl (chantal). All girls competing should get 100% attention, full access to styling options, experimenting with makeup & different looks, working on flaws, weaknesses etc. Giving girls unflattering gowns is a no no, not in 2010!

Salome had one of the best MJW videos, well spoken & confident. Her weakness was always her energy (lack thereof). She seemed dull mostve the time, maybe she gave up cuz she saw what was happening. They were pushing Chantal to win, and everyone else was forgotton. When I heard Chantal was in the pageant again, my knees were weak, more so she was armed with Harvard Diploma & allowed to sport fake contacts to fool the crowd! I noticed they were pushing her so hard..& I had the strangest feeling ever, considering her friends, were now in charge of the contest. She was pushed in everything & acted motherly. She also spoke (unscripted) at the infamous Rotary lunch. LIKe a psychic I could read the headlines mentally that wud appear: HARVARD GRAD TAKES MJW 2010 TITLE”.(sound nice huh??)..Haha, I saw it coming..& even warned Spartan about 3 different times before the finale..they didnt heed…
