Miss World 2010: Which Beauty Are You Watching?

Hey fashionistas,

No doubt like me you’ve been keeping a close eye on the Miss World 2010 competition, in Sanya, China.  Although the competition culminates on October 30, 2010, a number of  other competitions have already taken place that fast track the winners to the semi finals.  Unfortunately Miss Jamaica World, Chantal Raymond was not selected.

The three fast-track winners, are Miss Puerto Rico, Beach Beauty; Miss Northern Ireland, Sports Beauty, and Miss Norway, Top Model. They will be accompanied by the host nation’s representative Miss China. Below are photographs of the semi-finalists:).

In this photograph courtesy of sanya.news.cn we have the winner of the Top Model contest, Miss Norway (centre).  She is accompanied by competition runners up  Miss USA (left) and Miss Russia.

In this photograph courtesy of chinanews.com you can see the winner of the Miss Sports Beauty competition Miss Northern Ireland (centre).  She is flanked by Miss Slovakia second place contestant (left) and Miss Norway.

In this photography courtesy of globalbeauties.com we see the winner of the  Miss Beach Beauty competition Miss  Peurto Rico (centre).    She is accompanied by Miss USA (left) and Miss Norway, second and third place contestants respectively

Miss Norway seems to be doing well!   Doesn’t she…. Hmmm.  She has placed well in all three of the  fast track competitions…closely followed by Miss USA...who placed in the top three for two of the competitions.  Which in the words of MeatloafTwo out of Three Ain’t Bad…” is it?

Have they taken the lead from Miss Brazil?

Now I know from previous discussions, Miss Jamaica and Miss China are not very popular with you.  However,Miss Brazil is…. Do you think she can make it? Or is their another beauty to watch?  Whose your favourite to win? And Why?

A lot of you have shared with me in other blog posts, emails and via twitter (www.twitter.com/qvdesigns ), I’d love you to get the discussion rolling here…I promise I will jump in with my opinions :) .

*Oh yes, for the uninitiated Meatloaf is a male singer who had a number of successful songs  starting in late the  1970s.  Its a cool song which you can check out on youtube…  or your parents record collection.

Honestly, many of the standard beauties this year don’t do it for me (the Latinas and Europeans in particular)… We want a newer, fresher and more exotic look. I’m tired of seeing the same look win year after year.

This year, quite a few of the caribbean girls stand out to me (not disclaiming Ms. Puerto Rico or Ms DR) but Miss St. Lucia is a beauty, so is T&T although she looks way older than the age stated for her – 18, i think?). Martinique and Curacao are two of my favorites, as well as Ms. Botswana.

  2. jenn says:

darling fashionistas.. the girls to watch are in no particular order the creme de la creme of the 115 girls …norway, st. lucia, zimbabwe, russia, india, martinique, puerto rico, botswana and china…good luck to all these girls !

  3. Phil says:

Hi all..ok, where do I start. BRazil was never all that to begin with, in fact Brazil never does very well in pageants, but theyr always hyped. Although China is host country, I think Miss China is really cute, she will definitely place in top 25 (or higher, if they will also have a top 10). Few yrs ago Miss China won Miss World, & even though she was the host girl, she deserved it, did you see her at the Model show? She was stunning. Talent was just announced today, Ireland won, Jamaica did not make top 25 in that either, in fact, Jamaica has really not performed at all in anything. Has anyone seen her Miss World video clip?? Personally I think its the most horrible thing ever, annoying tone of voice, & lacking in personality, even intelligence. I wished there was something about her I could applaud her for, I just cant find one darn thing. For me, Miss World will be either Norway, or Botswana. Both are strikingly beautiful, neither country has won Miss World before, both have been very visible in China. Both MW clips are also very appealing. Russia could place 3rd, at the Model, she was perhaps THE #1 crowd favorite. ST lucia is fading, only because she lacks stage presence- saw her at the Model show, and there wasnt much energy there. I expect her to place in top 25 or higher, she even made top 20 Talent today! I also expect Martinique to place. BTW, another girl to watch, Miss Zimbabwe..Fabulous!!, with a gorgeous all natural afro, she rocked the Model, I wouldve placed her higher in Model. I expect her to do very well at Miss World. Im still at a loss what Spartan was looking for this year, when they chose this young lady, cuz I really see nothing there beside an ordinary girl who studies hard. Frankly, Harvard is irrelevant, in a beauty contest, unless the candidate is beautiful.

  4. AshLee says:

I also just noticed that they changed the photos for Chantal on the Miss World 2010 official website…
    http://www.missworld.com/allcontestant2010.html

  5. Phil says:

Yes, they changed Jamaicas pics, those were the offical pics submitted by spartan (they are posted on MJW site), they look nice, but they are photo shopped :) . Another girl to watch for the title is Slovakia, in fact, SLOVAKIA, BOTSWANA & NORWAY could well be the top 3, Im not blown away by Russia, but she still has a nice look, & shes well liked it seems. I would love to see Zimbabwe make top 5, Im glad she dissed the extensions and opted to go au natural with that huge afro, it works. Shes also tall, elegant & stately. St LUCIA could make top 5 if she improves her presence drastically, but I think they already have the final placings, the MW show is just that, a presentation show :) , girls were being judged from day one in China..and Jamaica was never a favorite..hence she was always in the background.

  6. jenn says:

and why do you think they changed Chantals pic and that it’s worth an announcement ? nothing will make a difference for her , not then, not now.

  7. AshLee says:

@Jenn… *lol* I hate to admit it but you are right… makes no difference that they changed Ms. JA’s pic… I’ll say no more. :)

  8. AshLee says:

@ Phil, so what do you think about Martinique and Curacao? They’re both beautiful. I think Curacao may be fading for me though. I still love Martinique and i totally agree with you on Ms. Botswana – gorgeous in a very natural way.

  9. Phil says:

@Ashlee..Funny, I was just chattin bout Martinique. I liked her from day one, & she made top 20 Beach..& Sport & Talent I believe. I Saw her in model & thought she did v well (but didnt place surprisingly). After watching her videos on MW site, I was taken aback- I luvd first video..hated the 2nd. St Lucia & Martinique will def be among top 25, St lucia might make top 10, she lost her steam. Bahamas & maybe Trinidad, might also make it. Guadeloupe is also cute..all these ladies made top 40 beach. Its shame we arent even talkin about Jamaica making it..so sad.

  10. Phil says:

I meant Bahamas, Guadeloupe & Trinidad might also make top 25, I dont see them cracking the top 10 though. Only St Lucia has that potential right now.

  11. Shaz says:

Have to agree with you….a fresher more modern take on the traditional beauty would be refreshing….fortunately a lot of these young ladies fit that criteria :)

  12. Shaz says:

Yes Phil! Congrats to Miss Ireland, Emma Waldron who won Miss Talent today. She played the violin & received a standing ovation. So she has been fast tracked to the semi finals. I have to agree with both you and @Jenn regarding the ladies that will be in the final 25…. As you say some beauties are starting to fade that created a great first impression…..sooooo I’m not quite ready to select my top 10 beauties yet ;)

  13. Shaz says:

Yes the photos have changed….But as the big day gets closer everyone is trying to improve the odds in there favour…..

  14. Shaz says:

I luv! the natural afro look on Miss Zimbabwe….and I totally agree that the judges have practically decided which beauties will place well on the big day……

  15. Phil says:

These are my top 15 who will really be competing for the Miss WOrld crown. The first 5 get nearly perfect 10s in my books, stunning girls with charm/personality to match. And yes..you can also tell a whole lot from their MW videos, poise, demeanour, personality, intellect, fake vs real…

    TOP 5 (no particular order)
    ITALY
    RUSSIA
    NORWAY
    BOTSWANA
    SLOVAKIA

    TOP 15- (no particular order)
    ZIMBABWE
    ETHIOPIA
    USA
    CHINA
    ST LUCIA
    THAILAND
    INDIA
    IRELAND
    BAHAMAS
    MARTINIQUE

  16. Shaz says:

I think everyone that watched was surprised that Miss Martinique didn’t place higher Phil……@AshLee looks like you may be getting your wish for a fresh, non traditional, gorgeous beauty queen… :)

  17. Ken says:

This is a beauty competition and Miss Jamaica is no beauty. Spartan could hang around halfway tree on any given day and see tons of beauties. I just don’t get it with these uptown people and their concept of a beauty queen.

  18. Phil says:

@Shaz, yes, Martinique looked every bit the Model. I loved her gown too. Im not bein biased against dark girls, but do they get a raw deal in these pageants? Honestly, USA did not deserve a place in top 3 Model, shes a big heavy girl. Martinique and/or Zimbabwe oozed Top Model,so did Sweden. I wouldve placed those 3 on top, even ahead of the lovely Norway (who by the way, is a top model in her country).

  19. Phil says:

@Ken..Im not sure which “uptown” people you refer to (concept of beauty), I wouldnt exactly call those who chose this years winner “uptown” LOL, perhaps therein lies the problem :) . And whether uptown, midtown, downtown or rural, we need some standards in these things, or else, whats the point??

  20. jenn says:

ken, you have me rolling over here beause you just got it all twisted and i dunno why .. but sad to say, chantal is not uptown , nor were any of the MJW winners in recent history.. at the risk of not sounding like a sorry snob i just wont say any names but part of problem is the lack of more naturally fabulous girls who generally have a more confident socialization ( REALLY FROM UPTOWN) that the current crop of very average , ordinary insecure and unexposed girls LACK…case in point, a girl like Jade Grant should never have lost to anyone that year … you do’nt get FABULOUS anymore than that .. those girls sign up for the job, and come ready …they make their beds and come ready to sleep in it ! so i would tell Spartan to move from standing up in HWT and go to a more salubrious haunting ground..

  21. jenn says:

there are lots of girls in the current MW that it’s impossible for me to attempt a list of 15 or 20. beyond great pics some girls are bland and not being able to tell more ’cause we’re not there is frustrating. remember Barbados last year , Leah Marville .., who would have thought she’d fare so poorly in the end . she was a stunner..!.. so my real wish is that the caribbean girls for whatever reason don’t have a repeat performace like Leah’s.

  22. Phil says:

Jenn, u hit nail on head. Iv seen many pics of Terri on MJW website, out and about..in capacity as Pageant Director, former MJW, she carries herself without any “umphh”, no makeup at all, very pap down, even though u can tell she has attractive features & shes physically fit. The apple dont fall far from the tree at all, I guess this is the new trend..The Director, by all means, must set the tone, at least when playing the role in public. I dunno why some Jamaican women dont take more pride in appearance, and enjoy dressing the part & looking great! Its not that hard at all either!

  23. AshLee says:

@Ken.. i have NO IDEA what you mean by “uptown people and their concept of a beauty queen.” How doesChantal being picked MJW become the fault of “Uptown people”???? Foolish talk!Right now 99% of us don’t think she was a good choice*period*
And @ Jenn, i agree with you. I will also say, in general many of the young ladies of the past years should not have ventured near the door to enter MJW or any beauty contest for that matter because these days whenever i look at the pics of contestants i’m appalled! No joke (not facially beautiful, terribly out of shape, lacking appeal, etc.)… Jamaica really gone bad!
HELLO, it’s a BEAUTY contest…. Please turn them back at the door! *lol*

  24. jenn says:

this is one of the best comments …AshLee, even your name rings of fabulousness…

..”HELLO, it’s a BEAUTY contest…. Please turn them back at the door! *lol*..”

  25. jenn says:

and now back to all you fashionistas.. note the list of judges for the MW final is now out and official. I made a wild guess that this being the 60th anniversary of MW that Cindy or Lisa might have been invited to China to judge but no such luck ! anyway, there will be prelim interviews to select remaining 20 semifinalists and you can bet that 1 or 2 girls will already be designated “winner” cause Julia don’t joke you hear me ? .. she run her own show and guarantee who she wants to work with for the next year ! so , fashionistas, Saturday’s finale will be merely a presentation, a chance for the world to say ‘thanks you ladies for a month of unrivaled pageantry’

  26. jenn says:

this year may be ripe for another beautiful black queen. with Agbani on the panel of judges I sure hope that becomes reality … in which case Ms’es Botswana, Martinique or St. Lucia would make a fine MW 2010!

  27. Phil says:

OK..so were down to the wire. Fabulous past Miss Worlds, the young & old will chose the winner (Im sure Morley will coach them too). So I have to pick a top 3- RUSSIA, NORWAY, BOTSWANA. I think its so close its not funny. I’ll give NORWAY the edge for few reasons. She made top 3 Beach Beauty, and every yr (except 1), Miss World was chosen from the Top 3 Beach. NORWAY also won top Model, she can work a stage. Her MW video, like BOTSWANAS & RUSSIAS, oozed personality & ease. I dont see ST Lucia or Martinique reaching top 5, but they should easily make top 25. Would be nice to see St Lucia in top 10, she really did a great job in China, just wished she showed more charisma on stage.

  28. Phil says:

So Kenya, won the last fast track. 1st runner up was Ghana (I forgot who was 3rd). I think its a real shame, Jamaica wasnt competitive at all, in any event, not necessarily to win, but even as a semi finalist. Spartan also need to take a serious look at their own fast track events, and/or abandon them completely (except for the obvious Beach Beauty). Chantal won, (or almost won) nearly all the Jamaican Fast Tracks- Talent-1st, Sports-2nd, Model-2nd, Beach-did not place, Public Vote (which dont make any sense)-1st. Despite all this, she was a no show at Miss World, literally, so clearly something is very wrong.

  29. Slim1234 says:

i was saying this from long time dat Chantal not going anywhere kerry moxam should have won. when you look at the girls at the miss world pageants- they’re stunning. though chantal is very articulate she is unpopular at the pageants 4 obvious reasons; she jus nuh mek it. this has always been the case for jamaica, we send out a wow contestant, e.g. a yendi or lisa hanna, but we don’t have a follow up to make our mark stay permanent. it’s not just about intelligence but beauty as well. yendi and some of the great beauties of Jmaica were all of the above. jamaica not going anywhere 1nce again.

  31. Shaz says:

Well now we know Miss World watchers….Miss USA is the winner….Surprised? Shocked? Agree? Disagree?…

  32. Ken says:

I’m wasn’t referring to the girl chosen as uptown, I’m referring to the people doing the choosing, the judges. They should use people involved with fashion and beauty for a living, to be the judges in these competitions. Example: Romae Gordon and Kingsley Cooper at Pulse, Dwight Peters at Saint and others involved and knowledgeable in international taste and standards of beauty.

  33. Phil says:

Congrats to USA. Miss World is full of surpises, but the winner wasnt exactly a shocker. She placed top 3 Beach Beauty & MW is always chosen from the top 3 beach. She also placed top 3 Model, She is a top prof Model from the famous Elite Models. ELITE handpicked her to rep USA in MW. USA is described as soft spoken, 18 yr old, just recently graduated from High School, hopes to become a teacher. Its another reminder to Spartan, MW is a young ladies contest, its not for the older accomplished, & Harvard means nothing to MW.

They prefer younger, fresh natural unassuming beauties, who are charming, personable, demure, and not loud, or in your face, or too carry on!!Spartan will need to drastically overhaul their pageant & judging. ST LUCIA placed 8th, and won Caribbean queen, another 18 yr old just left High School. Bahamas & Puerto Rico also placed in top 25. I think St lucia couldv placed higher with a more stunning gown. I wished Martinique & Zimbabwe was also in Top 25. Norway shouldv been in top 3, but I heard politics mightv hurt her chances- CHina-Norway issue re Nobel Peace awarded to Chinese dissident! Better luck next year Jamaica! Happy Botswana placed 2nd, it mustv been very close between Botswana & USA, both were simple, stunning, unpretentious.

  34. slim1234 says:

my sentiments exactly Phil. full time now we stop with the foolishness. Jamaicans just love a person with PHD. at the Miss World Pageant, it means nothing, as long as your beautiful, young and fresh and have a bubbly personality, or charming and elegant…you stand a chance. take Sara Lawrence and Yendi Phillips for e.g. You don’t need a PHD or titles behind your name to rep.it doesn’t count when your at that finals.
Chantal didn’t even have a Jamaican accent nor an inviting personality;she’s not even lovely to look at, no offense…. in addition I didn’t even see her at all, I was wondering if she was still in China. again, what the hell was spartan thinking?????????????????????

  35. jenn says:

the judges got it right once again and i’d have been equally thrilled if Botswana had won.. what a stunning young lady ! Italy was also refreshing and I missed India in the lineup but again , the results did not surprise. look at usa’s bio, 18 yo, just graduated high school in may, wants to teach.. and quote she “never met a stranger” now isn’t that a response worth a million ? how can anyone compare that to chantal’s endless rantings at 24 yo about harvard and talking as if she stuffed her mouth with twin guineps ?? anyway…congrats usa.., well done !

  36. Sandy says:

slim1234…Spartan was not thinking, they were drinking!!! The entire committe or board of dirctors should resign, immediately get their visions tested as well as psychiatric examination. Their poor choice this year will no doubt go down in history as the worst in pageant history, and they should all be fired!!

I am sure we will hear very little from Chantal throughout the year, she will go underground, perhaps for fear of being being “booed” when she makes an appearance. Hope she enjoyed the free trip to China. Spartan has lost credabality with this years choice! It’s disgraceful to say the least!

  37. chrisanthony gregory says:

Well well well … No surprise Chantal did not place AT ALL. The MJW contestants seemed shocked that she won and every time I see her on TV I am flabbergasted. She just never cut it! Of all the pretty girls in Jamaica, dem send Chantal … Shame Spartan… Further a degree does not beauty or intelligence make …Thank Miss World for selecting a High School graduate … I hope Spartan learns…

  38. AshLee says:

@Slim1234… I have to disagree with you on Chantal… she is terrible in interviews or speaking in general (watch her MJW video – JESAS!). Her voice is not pleasant and she rambles on (so annoying!)… which is typically a sign that one lacks confidence. *like an airhead!!*

@Jenn.. and so we know the fabulous think alike! *lol* Our Ms. Botswana took 2nd and in my opinion could have easily been 1st!

  39. AshLee says:

I hate to say it, but Jamaica deserves to lose (or in this case, not place)… Let this be a lesson to the MJW judges for future… Please select a girl who has the complete package and not just someone who ‘looks good on paper’.

  40. AshLee says:

@Phil… Lets put your ‘eye’ and analysis to work!
You should be on the next MJW/MJU judging panel. Good job! :)

  41. Phil says:

@Ashlee..LoL..Id luv to judge, if only Im asked. LoL. I told mickey few days before the finals, exactly ‘why’ Chantal should not be crowned, I saw what was about to happen! Her video did not appeal to me- blank (fake) personality, and there was no beauty, she had no figure. Her Harvard degree did nothing for me. Sadly Mickey was not involved in the pageant this yr. Iv even communicated with Julia Morley (MW) about her contest before, and surprisingly she responded.LoL.

Judging a contest is not exactly rocket science. MJW is a young ladies contest, and not for the older accomplished woman. Spartan need to go back to the early yrs, and see what worked back then, when they had success. Young, fresh, demure, unpretentious beauties, very typical of our decent Jamaican girls (uptowners)LoL. You need young women with likeable personalities, who are easily conversant. Girl like Yendi would never place in top 5 at MW, her personality was too strong, too much. Most girls are never perfect when they enter or win MJW, you work with potential & improve. Lisa Hanna today, looks 10 times better than she did back in 93 when she won. As a dear friend kept saying, Judges should be ppl in arts & media, fashion & film, beauty, model industry, creative outgoing FAB ppl. Judges should never be your typical pharmacists, school principals, or even Vets :) . CAN I GET AN AMEN TO THAT??

  42. @ashlee: I think that’s what i said. overall her performance was a mess and she deserved her placing—->not to b placed at all. It’s simple they’re looking for someone who’s not only intelligent and or smart, but also attractive.

  43. I’m sure I’m not the only one who watched a high school graduate walked away with the crown, lol. she swept passed MISS PHD that had d fat Harvard Degree;MISS WORLD ORGANIZERS NUH FRIGHTEN FI DAT!!!

  44. Shaz says:

@Phil Amen! I agree with Ashlee we all need to pressure Mickey for you to be a judge for MJW….your talent combined with a Lisa Hanna, Kingsley Cooper or/& Dewight Peters alongside other creative individuals, like me ;) will allow Jamaica to dominate MW….

  45. Sean Knight says:

    Who was better than Chantal?

It is not the fault of Spartan/judges that the girls who came to the competition were only pretty faces, had no stage prescence could not get it together on the night of the competition. It is a competition and “when the S came to the test” Chantal was the best of the bunch. I only hear one other girl who could have been a contender Moxom. Yes she have the body, poise, however no personality and was extremely nervous and could not get through her answer(fyi Chantal gave an excellent answer). Outside of Kerry nobody else had the package. If there was a better candidate the judges would have made the right choice. It is the same set of judges who chose Sara, Terri, Jade etc.
Let us not confuse either Fashion shows and Pagent Compeitions. We cannot have a panel of judges who only now about pagents, balance is necessary. Perhaps that is the first correction.
These judges picked a winner with a competition less than a month away if after a several weeks of competition and performance the other girls cant get it togher, how is she going to get it one month before the competition we have no time for “working” on our winner.
Perhaps the timing (of the competition) needs to be changed, perhaps a few judges need to be changed, criteria might needs to be adjusted but taking all into consideration of the MJW 2010, Chantal was the best.

  46. jenn says:

AshLee …, Chantal did not look good on paper nor does she look good from any other vantage point. simply put she’s not beauty pageant material yet the judges at MJW saw something totally different from anyone’s concept of beauty. in fact the judges at MJW seem to select a girl based on some personal desire in a particular year because should you look at past years and the girls who performed well, the similarities are only too glaring, yet when presented with girls having similar persona, aura and presence, they opt for the total opposite. choosing chantal was so deliberate it ain’t funny !

  47. jenn says:

..Shaz.., regarding judges at MJW, be careful what/who you ask for !

  48. AshLee says:

    @ Phil… AMEN!!!! *lol*

  49. Shaz says:

    @Jenn Ha! ha! ha!

  50. jenn says:

    Phil.., & Ashlee.., what’s this… a dynamic duo? lol
