Do you know your rights?

Consumers often do not realize that they have a lot of power. The sales of goods and services depend on a steady stream of customers. So without consumers there would be no business. If a product or service leaves consumers unsatisfied they have the right to demand better service.

What are the practical applications of asserting your rights?

Well, suppose you purchased a product after the expiration date?

The product when opened might not be at its best in flavour or freshness. You have the right to return the product and seek a refund or exchange.

I have been to many stores and seen signs that proclaimed that they do not give refunds. So what should you do in this situation? It is important to calmly speak to the manager of the store as they will often agree to an exchange.

Jamaican consumers sometimes do not know how to complain effectively. If the manager is reluctant to assist you it is always good to remember the power of the pen! This means that you can write letters about your experience and send them to the headquarters of the company or the media. Sometimes negative publicity can force the company to take action.

If all else fails, you can choose to stop using that service or purchase goods at that particular store.
Consumers have the power! How do you use your power?
