It’s become more and more important to make your dollar stretch as far as it can go. In order to accomplish this I spend a lot of time deciding where to shop and what items are on special.

One of the best tools for helping me to save money on my shopping bill is to keep abreast of the Weekly Specials printed in The Gleaner. The Gleaner dated March 7, 2013 had one such advertisement of the specials offered by the Progressive Grocers which is a company that represents a group of leading supermarkets in Jamaica.

A number of items have been placed on special by the Progressive Grocers which is certainly a relief for consumers during these difficult economic times. Some of the items on sale include: Lasco mackerel, Pure Country orange juice, Celestial teas and V8 splash 200ml.

Mega Mart Wholesale club has also been advertising special discounts on selected items. The items that are on sale at this store include breakfast cereals, purified water, shoes, furniture and Lasco instant chocolate mix. The 40% sale on shoes advertised in The Gleaner caught my eye and most of the shoes retailed for $2500.00 before the sale and $1500.00 after the discount. There is also a wide variety of furniture on sale which has been discounted by 20%.

If shoes are not on your list they are also having a sale on select Hercules car care products such as a three piece sun shield set. The original price of that product was $1160 but with the discount consumers will pay only $928.00.

The use of coupons and discount cards at supermarkets have also reduced my shopping bill. Many supermarkets such as MegaMart, Brooklyn and Khemlani supermarket offer these discount cards for their customers. Often you accumulate points which can be then used to purchase items. Some supermarkets offer the cards for free while others charge a sign up fee.
