I knew it would be an interesting development when the cellular rates started to fall. I believe that having competition effectively ensures that the consumers best interest is given priority.

So I celebrated as I heard each company pledge to lower their costs. The company that fired the first ‘punch’ was LIME and so everyone eagerly looked to Digicel to counteract their latest move.

In order to keep their customers, Digicel had to provide a competitive rate that would prevent them from going to their competitor.

Did Digicel achieve their goal?

Well, let’s see what they are offering to their customers in comparison to LIME’s $2.99 Talk EZ plan. According to the article in The Gleaner dated June 13, 2013, ‘Digicel pre-paid customers using a Digicel phone to call any other network will pay a low of $2.49 per minute to a high of $2.99 per minute under a suite of new plans announced by the company.’

What do customers think of the new rates announced by Digicel?

Most people I spoke to were encouraged by the new rates. They thought it was a move in the right direction as we continue to grapple with the financial crisis that grips our country.

However, some felt that the plans offered by the company in the new rate might be confusing to some Jamaicans. The new plans include Brawta Plan, the Gimme Five Extra Plan, the Double Bubble Plan, and the $2.99 Plan – all with per-second billing – plus the $2.49 Plan and the $2.89 Sweet Plan with per-minute billing. According to the company these plans give their consumers flexibility. These new rates only apply to prepaid customers as post paid customers pay a rate of $1 per minute.

So will Digicel win this round or is LIME not out for the count?

There are those loyal customers who are ready to stay with whatever company they felt most comfortable.

What do you think? Let me hear from you!!
